Gold hits 3-week peak as weaker greenback backs prices

On Friday, gold prices ascended to a three-week peak amid low-volume holiday trading, as the greenback pulled back, driving the appeal of the number one precious metal.

In New York, February delivery gold futures leapt to a session high of $1,164.25 a troy ounce, a value not observed since December 9.

Last it was at $1,160.50, ascending 0.25%, thus contributing to a revenues of $17.00 yesterday. Prices of the yellow metal tumbled to an 11-month minimum of $1,124.30 earlier in December.

The greenback kept pulling back on Friday, declining from its 14-year-peak against a basket of key currencies as traders took profits in the run-up to the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Wall Street ended lower for a second day running in the previous session, as market participants balked at the Dow facing the 20,000 point milestone and rushed to take profits. Gold’s appeal surged, as investors shifted positions from riskier shares to the safe have metal.

EUR/USD & German PMI Manufacturing (December 2016): It's time to sell?

Today at 08:55 GMT will be released the final German PMI Manufacturing data for December and it’s expected to remain unchanged on 55.5. In the Eurozone, Spain, France and Italy are expected to release their PMI Manufacturing numbers, alongside with the EZ general data for the same month and analysts are expecting no major changes. However, it will be interesting to see the price action on EUR pairs if German’s data comes in stronger or weaker than expected.

Our technical analysis for EUR/USD at H1 chart is showing a recovery above the 200 SMA with a moving average’s crossover in place. The resistance zone of 1.0589 helped to cap further gains in the pair and that’s why we are seeing a bearish move with should help to erase overbought levels in the short-term. If the pair does a breakout above the 1.0547 level, then it can test the December 30th highs, while a downside continuation should extend the corrective bias towards the 200 SMA.

GBP/USD & UK Manufacturing PMI (December): Will the bears strengthen further?

Today at 09:30 GMT will be published the UK Manufacturing PMI for December, which saw a decline during November to 53.4 and analysts are expecting more dips in the data, but the consensus is calling for a 53.3 number. In the last five months, Manufacturing PMI had been mixed for the United Kingdom, but as markets are waiting for a decline, then a positive number should help to boost the GBP pairs during the week.

Our technical analysis for GBP/USD at H1 chart is showing a bearish picture, as the pair was capped by the 200 SMA and it seems the demand zone of 1.2269 can be challenged ahead of the UK data. If GBP/USD manages to break that area with a negative number, then we can expect a decline towards the 1.2239 level, which should strengthen the bearish bias for the short-term.

China initiates rural assets reforms to spur farmers' incomes

China has already kicked off reforms to enable farmers to turn their assets into shares in various ventures in order to boost their incomes, as the country's agriculture minister Han Changfu revealed on Tuesday.

Han Changfu stressed that currently it’s urgent to safeguard farmers' property rights and it's more difficult to sustain surges in farmers' incomes. The reform will undoubtedly help to boost farmers' property-related incomes.

However, the government is going to push forward the reform in rather an orderly manner, especially considering its complexity.

According to the reform plan, farmers are going to be allowed to turn their assets, including land use rights along with operating assets, into stocks in various ventures.

The Chinese government will carry out verification as well as evaluation of collectively owned rural assets, expected to be finished in 3 years.

GBP/USD: Pound doesn’t want to fall down

Technical levels: support – 1.2300; resistance – 1.2350, 1.2410.

Trade recommendations:

1. Buy — 1.2300; SL — 1.2280; TP1 — 1.2350; TP2 — 1.2410.

Reason: bearish Ichimoku Cloud, but the rising Senkou Span A; a dead cross of Tenkan-sen and Kijun-sen, but the rising Tenkan-sen; the prices are in the Cloud after bouncing from the bottom border of the Cloud.

EUR/USD: "Double Top" stopped bullish rally

6-1-2017-EUR-H4.png

There’s an upward correction, which is taking place on the four-hours chart. Bulls have broken the downtrend, so the price is consolidating. Therefore, the market is likely going to decline towards a support at 1.0552 – 1.0524 in the short term. If a pullback from this area happens, there’ll be an opportunity to have another bullish movement, so we should keep an eye on the next resistance at 1.0655 as a possible intraday target.

The price faced a resistance at 1.0629, so we’ve got a “Double Top” pattern, which has been confirmed by the last “Flag”. In this case, bears are likely going to test a support at 1.0552 – 1.0524 during the day. Considering a possible pullback from these levels, bulls will probably try to test a resistance at 1.0590 – 1.0655 afterwards.

GBP/USD: "V-Bottom" stopped bears

12-1-2017-GBP-H4.png

The main trend is still bearish, but the price is likely going to test the nearest resistance between the levels 1.2270 – 1.2309. If we see a pullback from this area, bears will probably try to test the closest support at 1.2198 – 1.2170.

12-1-2017-GBP-H1.png

The price faced a resistance at 1.2269, so we’ve got a “V-Top” pattern, which led to a consolidation between a resistance at 1.2219 and a support at 1.2170. Nevertheless, bulls are likely going to test the nest resistance at 1.2309, which is strengthened by the local downtrend. If a pullback from this level happens, there’ll be an opportunity to have a decline in the direction of a support at 1.2198 – 1.2170.
