KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will eventually sign a convention that commits the government to racial equality based on international standards, but Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad warns that it will not be easy.

Mahathir said negotiations must first be held with all communities before the government formally signs the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), amid protests from some groups who accuse supporters of the treaty of trying to undermine the constitution’s special rights for the Malays and Bumiputeras.

“There are so many races and they are sensitive about certain things,” Mahathir told reporters today.

But Mahathir said there was no use talking about Malay special rights, adding that “Malay dominance” or “Ketuanan Melayu” was meaningless if the community was not in control of the economy.

“I tell the Malays that there is no point talking about ‘Ketuanan Melayu’ if you are a coolie. If you want to be a master, you can be one, but you must have knowledge, be hardworking, don’t cheat, don’t steal,” he said.

Mahathir then took a potshot at his rival.

“Don’t follow the example of the old prime minister,” he said.

Mahathir, who earlier launched the National Policy on Industry 4.0 (Industry4WRD) at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry here, also spoke on other topics:

On investigations over land sold to Bank Negara Malaysia

“I only know that the land was sold to BNM for RM2 billion. What happens after that I do not know, where the money goes I don’t know. Obviously someone in BNM knows about it. They are investigating it.”

On special incentives and subsidies

“I was asked this question in Langkawi when we tried to tell people how to make more money. They asked me, “Are you going to give some incentives?”

We are telling them to make more money, what incentives do you want? More money is the incentive.

Everyone wants incentives, even to eat and breathe, people want incentives. It’s a mentality that is wrong.

I give up, everybody wants incentives, subsidies. Why not just take the profit, we give you money, that’s what the previous government did.

They gave money to people, they don’t have to work, don’t work also get RM500. If Malaysians become like that, very soon they can’t even think, can’t even move, can’t do anything for themselves because they are always looking out for subsidies.”

On Najib Razak saying present government lacks economic direction

“I want to join him in borrowing a few trillion dollars and then manage how to pay that back, if he can tell me how…

That should be his theme instead of trying to divert attention from his own problems.”

On Malaysia-China ties after Uighur dissidents not sent back to Beijing

“In China, I was very well received in China, we didn’t talk about that.”
We will sign ICERD, but it’s not easy, says Dr M

KUALA LUMPUR: Over 200 protesters rallied outside the Parliament building today against the ratification of a United Nations convention that would commit the government to racial equality based on international standards.

The demonstration, organised by a coalition of about 40 Islamic NGOs called Gerakan Pembela Ummah, saw participants chanting slogans against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Shouting “Jahanam ICERD” (Go to hell, ICERD), they also called for Bumiputera rights and the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to be upheld as provided for in Article 143 of the Federal Constitution.

Several representatives also passed a memorandum against the convention to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s office. The memorandum was received by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for national unity and social wellbeing Mohamed Farid Md Rafik.

A few government officials, including Education Minister Maszlee Malik, were seen attempting to address the crowd.

Mohd Fauzi Shaffie, president of Pertubuhan Jalur Tiga Malaysia, said in his speech that Article 153 of the constitution which provides for the special rights of Bumiputeras, should not be compromised as this would threaten national stability.

He dismissed claims by those who supported ICERD that ratification of the convention would not affect the article in question.

Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia leader Omar Kassim meanwhile said they were not discriminating against other races, only upholding the rights of Bumiputeras and the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“There was a time when the British tried to grant citizenship to the Chinese and Indians,” he said.

“In any effort to develop the nation, we have to look back at history, at how we formed the country. There’s a lot of history behind it, particularly in relation to Islam, social contracts and the special rights of the Malays.”

Speaking to FMT later, Omar said ICERD should not be an issue.

“We have been living peacefully for so long. We Malays have never discriminated against other races’ right to practise their religion.

“The UN ratification is a globalisation move. This is the way for them to force their laws on us. They force us to follow the Human Rights Convention when we have our own constitution, arguing that now, countries do not have their own sovereignty.”

Jahanam bangsa kita.
Knpe perlu focus benda mcm ni dlu.sdgkan byk benda lain yg utama boleh buat sbgai kerajaan.

Adakah dgn sign ni masalah kemiskinan.masalah ekonomi..segala masalah rakyat2 marhen akan selesai.

Manifesto pon xdapat tunai lagi.
Nk focus buat bnde2 yg xperlu.

Ayat berlapik PM

Kenapa bila kita pertahankan hak utk mengiktiraf tanah asal nenek moyang kita nie, kena disabitkan dengan istilah 'ketuanan melayu'... istilah 'ketuanan melayu' itu pulak dijadikan utk menghina bangsa melayu pemalas dan sebagainya

Rasanya melayu sendiri pon xpernah betul2 genggam istilah ketuanan melayu... dah byk benda kita bagi, dan xpernah pulak sekat hidup bangsa lain... xpernah kita tuntut 100% ketuanan melayu tu...

Dah cakap melayu itu ini, kerajaan / pemimpin cari jalan... xkan nak buang mcm tu ja... betol kerajaan dah buat DEB dulu utk bantu ekonomi bumiputra... capai atau tak sasaran tu...? mampu x melayu bersaing hasil dari DEB tu...?

hari sign memang hari ni xde kesan lagi... tapi akan ada timeframe utk capai benda2 tu kena ikut acuan dia... lastly memang bakal terhapus semua hak yg ada
