RI's parliament targets asset forfeiture bill passage by Dec 2026

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Habiburokhman, chairman of Commission III of Indonesia’s House of Representatives, said deliberations on the Asset Forfeiture Bill are being expedited and targeted for completion by December 2026 at the latest.

Commission III will continue public hearings, consolidate input, meet with the government, deliberate on the bill and seek final approval at a December plenary session.

“After deducting recess periods, the parliament has only about eight effective weeks remaining to deliberate on the Asset Forfeiture Bill,” Habiburokhman said here Tuesday.

Commission III has held 35 public hearings, conducted three regional working visits and received written submissions from dozens of community groups, he said.

With the ratification deadline approaching, the public may still submit written views on the draft bill, Habiburokhman said.

He said efforts to gather public input were nearing their maximum capacity, with dozens of groups submitting their views to parliament.

Most respondents strongly support the bill’s creation while also backing careful drafting, Habiburokhman said.

“This will reduce the potential for corruption in enforcement efforts, particularly abuses of power by law enforcement officers,” he said.

Habiburokhman said the bill has taken longer than other legislation, including revisions to the Criminal Procedure Code and National Police Law, because its concept is new to Indonesia.

Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas previously said President Prabowo Subianto had ordered the government to accelerate passage of the Asset Forfeiture Bill.

“The president’s order to the minister is clear: expedite it. But because the bill was initiated by parliament, we are waiting,” Supratman said on August 14.
