"When trading forex fundamentally using the
time periods we do. We are not trading the actual results of an important number.
Thinking like an economist doesn't work. That's why you don't usually hear me talking about economics in detail.
We are trading short term reactions in a contrived market. What happens in the big picture economically isn't really of importance to what we are doing at the time of the trade.
We need to know what the speculators are going to be doing over the next few seconds and how they will be interpreting things. Then, once all the kerfuffle is over, we can look at the long range implications of those numbers for a bigger picture.
The decision is up to the speculators and traders in our network.
It is how they will react in the seconds and minutes following the announcement of official numbers that differed from what they expected to see. In and out fast. I am not talking about trying to get in micro-seconds after an announcement. Those days are over.
My current way to trade news is by waiting for all the ducks to line up and the lights to be green. My strategy since last summer has been to wait a few seconds or minutes after the release of numbers until I see two things line up correctly.
1..
The numbers must be off by X amount from consensus. (X= trigger) . This means I have decided that a trade would not be worthwhile unless it is off the consensus by at least X amount. (

2.. I wait to see the move begin.
If there is a spike up or down, 9 out of 10 times, the spike will retrace more than 50% and often 80 % within a minute or two, then pause giving us lots of time for orders before moving again in the fundamental direction dictated by the numbers and possible revisions.
SHOULD THESE TWO CONDITIONS NOT BE MET BY THE REPORT, I SCRATCH AND WAIT FOR ANOTHER TIME. NO REPORT IS THAT IMPORTANT.
THERE WILL ALWAYS BE ANOTHER ONE COMING ALONG THAT MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A SAFE TRADE."
