RAWANG, April 22 — Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin reminded the more than 10,000 workers at the Perodua production plant here this evening that without the Barisan Nasional, Perodua would not exist.
Speaking at the launch of the second national car maker’s 1.7 millionth vehicle, Muhyiddin said it was because of the foresight of the BN government that Perodua was started.
“Perodua is the manifestation of the government’s efforts to promote Malaysia’s automotive industry.
“And today’s event is a milestone of these efforts, beginning from the days that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was our country’s prime minister,” he said.
He noted that the formation of Perodua had provided jobs for over 10,000 workers, a number that he pointed out was “not small”.
“It means that because of efforts by the BN government, we have created a huge job opportunity for the people,” he said.
Muhyiddin’s words received thunderous applause from the hundreds of Perodua staff members who gathered at the plant’s corporate building here to listen to him.
“I have to campaign a little. I am sure some of you here are voters (in Hulu Selangor)... so if you do not support the BN...” he said.
He later told the audience that he was just teasing them for he was certain they were all supporters of the BN.
“It was due to the BN leadership that Malaysia is a country that is not only a producer of common products but that also has the capability to explore heavy industries.
“And we are confident in our own strengths and expertise and we do not rely on foreign countries in this industry like Japan. It was because of self-reliance that we formed Perodua and created all these job opportunities for you,” he said.
He assured the audience that the government’s efforts in further developing local industries would continue, especially in view of the fact that the economy was slowly healing.
“Today, we witness the production of Perodua’s 1.7 millionth vehicle. In the years to come, we will be witnessing bigger things and bigger achievements.
“Suffice to say, Perodua, through the management and the leadership of its staff, has become a pride for Malaysia,” he said.
