Arsenal Arsenal Transfer Rumors

Arsenal set to sign TWO strikers - but Van Nistelrooy isn't one of them

Published 13:25 01/01/10 By John Cross

Gunners boss Wenger made tentative enquiries about the availability of number one target, Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh, but has been told that there is no chance of him leaving in January.

But Wenger remains confident of signing the Moroccan on a Bosman-style free transfer next summer after his contract with Bordeaux runs out. Chamakh is keen on Arsenal ahead of interest from Everton and Tottenham.

But Wenger is still considering signing a striker in January to boost his options with Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner out injured and Eduardo out of form.

Wenger’s first option is Wolfsburg’s Edin Dzeko but the German club’s £20m asking price and interest from AC Milan is a major stumbling block. Toulouse forward Andre-Pierre Gignac also appeals.

Arsenal may also consider a short-term deal for an experienced striker but Luca Toni has returned to Roma and Wenger has laughed off the possibility of signing Ruud van Nistelrooy from Real Madrid.

Wenger - I expect a busy transfer window

Arsène Wenger is expecting a busy transfer window - especially once the richest clubs start splashing their cash.

Football is feeling the effects of the recession but that didn't stop Manchester City and Real Madrid embarking on a massive spending spree last summer. City alone paid in excess of £100million for Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure and Joleon Lescott and that money trickled down through the Premier League and beyond.

Wenger himself could enter the market and he is predicting that a number of clubs will do business before the end of the month.

"The transfer window will be busy because we have some massive clubs who need to buy players or who look like [they will]," said the Arsenal manager.

"You don't imagine [Roberto] Mancini coming in at Manchester City in December without buying a player in January with the amount of money they have.

"If the big clubs move the smaller clubs move as well because they might have some income. So I think it will be busy."

Wenger keen to replace Van Persie goals

Arsène Wenger is looking at the possibilities of making a signing in January despite his side being on target to break Premier League goalscoring records.

No team has scored 100 top-flight goals in a season since the inception of the Premier League. But at the halfway stage of the current campaign, Arsenal have hit the back of the net 51 times.

That means they are on course to smash Manchester United's record of 97 goals scored in a Premier League season, set in 1999/2000.

However, Wenger admits that injuries to key players have left Arsenal in need of another striker.

"Robin Van Persie and Bendtner contributed to many of the 51 goals we scored," said the manager. "They were both in outstanding form and we miss them.

"But on the other hand we have played 19 games and if you multiply 51 by two it is over 100 goals for the season.

"That is absolutely tremendous and people don't realise how efficient we are going forward.

"I can understand that people are scared because we are short [up front].

"I don't deny that, but I always hoped for a long time that Bendtner would be available at the beginning of January but that is not the case now. So we have to look somewhere."
