Arsenal Arsenal Transfer Rumors

Gunners head N'Zonzi chase
Transfer battle to resume for Blackburn midfielder

By Graeme Bailey

Sky Sports understands that Arsenal are now leading the chase for Blackburn star Steven N'Zonzi.

A host of clubs were chasing the Frenchman in January, with Stoke making a move to try and lure him from Ewood Park.

Blackburn stood firm and the player was happy to stay until the summer and help with Rovers' battle against relegation.

But it now seems that N'Zonzi is ready to move on at the end of the season, with a host of clubs ready to do battle.
Interest

Sky Sports understands that N'Zonzi has moved towards the top of Arsene Wenger's wanted list following a string of excellent displays.

Wenger is already a confirmed fan, with his interest first emerging when Arsenal were linked with the former Amiens man back in 2010.

The Emirates boss has maintained an interest in the 23-year-old and it is believed the Gunners are now in pole position to land him.

However, there is extensive interest in N'Zonzi with Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle all keeping tabs on him.

Arsenal agree £10.9million fee for Cologne striker Lukas Podolski

Arsenal are close to signing Cologne striker Lukas Podolski after the north London side agreed a £10.9million fee with his German club.

By Jimmy Nsubuga - 8th March, 2012

The 26-year-old is rumoured to have already agreed a four-year contract worth £100,000-a-week, which would mean the only potential stumbling block is a medical.

The Germany striker broke into the national team when he was a teenager but many feel he has yet to fulfil his full potential.

The Poland-born forward has scored 16 goals in 20 matches for Cologne in the Bundesliga this season but has grown disenchanted with the club due to its poor position in the table and its 'lack of ambition'.

His fellow countryman Per Mertesacker, who swapped Werder Bremen for Arsenal at the start of the season, revealed earlier in the week he had spoken to Podolski about joining the Gunners.

'Lukas has shown a lot of interest in recent weeks and has sent me a text message,' the centre-back said.

'As you can imagine, I've told him positive things.

'I have written to him to tell him how well he can do here and what a great club it is. I think it can happen.'

Arsenal have been short of quality up front all season with back-up strikers Marouane Chamakh and Park Ju-young failing to convince.

The move may also help to persuade Robin van Persie to stay at the Emirates. The Dutch striker has yet to sign a new deal and will have 12 months remaining on his contract in the summer.

Cologne are currently 14th in the Bundesliga table but if they're relegated Podolski is said to have a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave for just £4million.

So it may be in the interests of the club to agree a transfer fee now.

ARSENAL last night had an £11million bid offer accepted for Cologne's German international striker Lukas Podolski.

Podolski, 26, has been offered a four-year contract worth £100,000-a-week.

Despite hoping for £20m, Cologne have accepted this latest offer, having turned down an initial bid of £8m.

Arsene Wenger's lack of strikers — other than Robin Van Persie — has been obvious this season.

Emirates defender Per Mertesacker admitted in Germany yesterday that he had been quizzed by his international team-mate about life in north London.

Mertesacker said: "He has been very interested for the past few weeks.

"He has sent me a number of text messages, and I have told him this is a great place to work and that Arsenal are an amazing club."

Arsenal are also interested in Dortmund star Mario Gotze and are tracking West Brom's Peter Odemwingie, who is seen as a squad player.
