Arsenal Set to Complete Signing Of £10m Defensive Rock
by The Newshound on March 11th, 2012
Emirates Stadium side likely to sign centre back?
Arsenal are on the brink of snatching Ajax ace Jan Vertonghen from Tottenham’s clutches.
Newcastle and Spurs have been trailing the Belgium international centre-back all season with Spurs emerging as hot favourites to clinch a £10million summer deal.
But Vertonghen made a secret visit to London last Tuesday and was at the Emirates to watch Arsenal’s thrilling 3-0 Champions League win over AC Milan.
Vertonghen met up with his close friend and international team-mate Thomas Vermaelen, now back from injury and playing for the Gunners.
This would represent a very smart, and inexpensive, bit of business if Arsene Wenger can pull it off. Given the injury nightmare that the North London side have suffered, a move for Jan Vertonghen this summer would add further strength in depth to a back-line that could well do with beefing up.
This term Arsenal have lost a number of defensive players to injuries, with the likes of Andre Santos, Kieran Gibbs, Bacary Sagna, Carl Jenkinson and most recently Per Mertesacker all spending long stints out of action and a move to beat Tottenham to the signing of Ajax man Vertonghen has been touted for some months and this source suggests a deal is on the cards.
Vertonghen is now the Ajax captain and into his sixth season as a regular in the Amsterdam Arena first eleven and knows Thomas Vermaelen well from his time at the Eredivisie club as well as playing alongside the Gunners defender for the Belgian national team.
The 24 year old has amassed over 200 appearances for Ajax but may well be keen to leave having seen his side fail to hit the high notes of last term’s title winning side. Frank De Boer’s side sit in fifth spot in the table at present and should they fail to secure a finish that brings Champions League football next term, then Vertonghen could be allowed to leave in order to balance the books.
