Sterling rose against the euro and dollar after John Gieve, deputy governor of the Bank of England, said inflation is likely to rise well above target in the coming months.
The British currency has come under pressure in recent weeks as weak data led to increased expectations of a UK rate cut. But Gieve's comments shifted investors' focus to inflation that could limit the extent of interest rate cuts.
The following technical analysis gives us a detailed lookout on what is expected to happen to GBP/JPY.
The buying point is at 210.48; based on a clear uptrend.
Fibonacci 61.8% is the take profit at 212.10
Fibonacci 50% is the stop loss at 209.70
The selling point is at 209.50; based on a break of a strong support.
Previous support is the take profit at 207.36
Fibonacci 23.6% is the stop loss at 211.10
To strengthen our analysis; we use many other indicators, starting with MACD (Moving Averages convergence divergence); we notice the crossing of the two moving averages, the shorter term moving average is faster than the long term and is pointing upwards with a break of zero line. In order to find the power of the market, we use RSI (Relative Strength Index). With RSI; we can determine that the market is in a bullish direction.
The momentum oscillator is very important to understand the strength of the market and as we see on the graph it is in an uptrend. The Stochastic oscillator bounced on 20% line and continues to go higher.
