Sterling Falls To Fresh All-Time Low Against Euro, 18-Month Low Versus Yen [GBP/USD]

1/14/2008 11:48:43 AM The pound tumbled to a fresh record low against the euro and an 18-month low versus the yen on Monday morning in New York, but remained uncertain against the greenback. Traders considered a report showing U.K. housing prices slowed more than expected in November.

The sterling traded with a lack of direction against the dollar on Monday just above Friday's multi-month low. The pound rose to 1.9646 by 3:00 am ET before trading back towards its overnight levels at 1.9583 later in the morning.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's dovish remarks last week have led investors to speculate that the Fed may offer a substantial interest rate cut at or before its January 29-30 policy meeting.

The pound hit an all-time low against the euro on Monday. The sterling eased to .7607 by 8:30 am ET before slightly paring its losses later in the morning, trading at .7594.

Investors weighed data showing Euro zone industrial production fell less than expected in November.

Versus the yen on Monday, the sterling fell to an 18-month low. The pound fetched 210.74 by 7:00 am ET, eventually trimming its losses to trade at 212.01 later in the morning.

U.K.'s house price index rose at a slower pace of 9.5% year-over-year in November, compared to 11.3% in October. Economists had predicted 10.5% growth for November. On a monthly basis, house prices fell 0.8%, reversing a rise of 0.8% in the previous year. The annual inflation rate for the three months to November was 10.5%.

Euro Nears Record High Against Dollar [EUR/USD]

1/14/2008 11:14:47 AM The euro approached its all-time high versus the greenback on Monday in New York. Traders continued to speculate that the Federal Reserve will cut U.S. interest rates at its next meeting.

Comments made by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke that significant interest rate action is very possible has made investors feel a 75 basis point cut in rates will happen at the January FOMC meeting.

Last week's dovish comments from Fed Chair Ben Bernanke have fueled expectations that the central bank may offer a substantial interest rate cut at or before its Hanuary 29-30 policy meeting.

The euro hit a 7-week high against the dollar on Monday as it approached its record high of 1.4966 set in late November. The euro rose to 1.4913 just before 7:00 am ET, paring its gains to trade at 1.4869 later in the morning.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday morning that a lowering of the interest rates by the Fed is not imminent before its January policy meeting. However, with more evidence that the US is moving into recession, the Federal Reserve's position may change.

Versus the sterling, the euro shot up to a fresh record high on Monday. The euro climbed to .7495 by 7:00 am ET before easing to .7593 later in the morning.

Investors mulled a report showing the U.K.'s house price index rose at a slower pace of 9.5% year-over-year in November, compared to 11.3% in October. Economists had predicted 10.5% growth for November. On a monthly basis, house prices fell 0.8%, reversing a rise of 0.8% in the previous year. The annual inflation rate for the three months to November was 10.5%.

Against the yen, the euro dropped on Monday. The euro slipped to a 10-day low of 159.92 by 7:00 am ET, before paring it losses later in the morning as it hit 160.38.

Traders considered data showing Euro zone industrial production dropped 0.5% month-on-month in November, reversing a revised 0.5% growth recorded in October. The initial growth estimate for October was 0.4%. Industrial output fell less than the 0.8% expected by economists.

Citigroup's Cash Injection From China Reportedly Facing Opposition [C]

1/14/2008 10:12:21 AM Citigroup's (C) fundraising plan is facing opposition from the Chinese government, the Wall Street Journal online reported Monday. The struggling bank had been planning to sell a $2 billion stake to China Development Bank, hoping to offset some losses as the company adds to an already large amount of write-offs.

The Journal cites “a person familiar with the situation,” claiming that the Chinese government has put the brakes on the deal, and that it could be off the table entirely. Citigroup has been severely damaged by the subprime mortgage crisis. It has sought outside investment already this year, receiving $7.5 billion from the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority in November. The company now owns 4.9 percent of the financial services company, making it Citigroup's largest shareholder.

Whether or not the deal has been completely removed from the table is unclear, the newspaper reported. The director of China Development Bank's news department, Yang Hua, stated that she was unaware of plans for her company to invest in Citigroup. She added that she was also unaware of any government opposition to such a deal, the Journal reported.

Citigroup is scheduled to report its fourth-quarter earnings Tuesday. The cash infusion from China Development Bank was expected to be announced to offset what is expected to be disappointing fourth quarter results.

As American financial giants continue to flounder and struggle following the subprime mortgage mess, their saviors have often come from overseas. Specifically, Chinese and Middle-Eastern companies have injected billions into the companies as the credit lines within the United States have all but dried up.

The possible failure of the plans to invest comes after a series of Chinese institutions have put money into struggling Wall Street firms. Most recently, China Investment Corp., the country's sovereign wealth fund, agreed to invest $5 billion in Morgan Stanley.

China Investment Corp., in a move that put it on the map as a commercial lender, lent $20 billion to China Development Bank at the end of December. The investment group, which is China's sovereign wealth fund, is also preparing to invest $5 billion in Morgan Stanley.

Japanese Stocks Trade Mixed

1/14/2008 9:38:19 PM Tuesday, Tokyo shares were trading mixed, after opening higher, as worries about the U.S. economy and a stronger yen persisted. Stocks opened higher on Wall Street's strong rebound after IBM reported robust fourth-quarter results, but sentiment turned cautious ahead of Citigroup's earnings release later today.

At 11:00 a.m. local time, the benchmark Nikkei 225 index was up 67.80 points at 14,178.59, but the broader-based Topix index of all the First Section issues on the Tokyo Exchange was down 5.37 points at 1,372.21.

At 10:54 a.m. local time, the U.S. dollar was quoted at 107.94-107.97 yen, down 0.99 yen from Friday's 5:00 p.m. quotes of 108.93-108.95 yen in Tokyo.

Sompo Japan Insurance plunged 5.5% after the company cut its net profit forecast for the year to March 2008 on Friday. Sumitomo Heavy Industries rose 2.2% on reports that the heavy machinery maker has reached an agreement to buy Demag Plastics Group, a major German manufacturer of production machinery for plastic parts, from a U.S. investment fund for over 10 billion yen.

Softbank Corp fell 1.5% after reports indicated that the company has decided to stop charging for calls made between users of its cellular phone service and its fixed-line IP phones starting April. Rival operator shares were mixed, with NTT Docomo shedding 1.1% and KDDI gaining 3.2%.

Japan's top non-ferros metal smelter Sumitomo Metal Mining rose 2.3%, while non-ferrous metal recycler Matsuda Sangyo gained 1.5%, extending gains for the sixth day.

Toyota Motor slipped 0.7%, but Matsushita Electric Industrial surged 3.4%. Shares of the consumer electronics giant have risen after it announced a plan on Thursday to change its corporate name to Panasonic effective October 1.
