Prabowo orders completion of 5,000 village bridges by year-end

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto ordered the completion of 5,000 village bridges by the end of 2026, as a push for Indonesia’s rural infrastructure development.

"By July 2026, of the 5,000 village bridges that the villagers have been desperately requesting, we have completed 1,000," President Prabowo said during a press conference following the Plenary Cabinet Meeting at the State Palace here on Monday.

With construction already underway, the President directly challenged the Bridge Repair Acceleration Task Force—led by Army Chief of Staff (KSAD) General Maruli Simanjuntak—to expedite and complete the project soon.

During the cabinet briefing, Prabowo questioned General Maruli regarding the feasibility of the year-end timeline.

After receiving assurances from the Army Chief of Staff that the task force would aggressively pursue the objective, Prabowo expressed his approval.

"5,000 (bridges) will be completed by 2026. Good," he remarked.

The government previously set a target to construct 5,000 suspension bridges by the end of 2026 as part of national efforts to strengthen community connectivity, particularly in remote and isolated areas.

In a statement on Thursday (June 25), Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya noted that the interim target for completing 2,500 bridges has been set for August 2026.

The construction of the suspension bridges is being carried out through close collaboration between the government, the Indonesian Army (TNI AD), and local communities.

The initiative aims to ensure faster, safer, and more equitable connectivity in the country’s outermost regions.

"In many areas that have been separated by rivers for decades, the presence of a bridge can transform people’s lives," the Cabinet Secretary stated.

Construction work will continue to be accelerated nationwide to ensure the target of 5,000 bridges is fully realized by the end of December 2026.
