Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Air Force is considering sections of East Java toll roads as alternative runways for military aircraft if conventional airbases become unusable during emergencies, a spokesman said Tuesday.

Air Force spokesman First Marshal I Nyoman Suadnyana said several sections are under review, including the Probolinggo-Banyuwangi toll road.

“It is part of the plan, but as of now, it remains under review,” Suadnyana said.

He said using toll roads as alternative runways would help ensure military operations can continue during crises that render conventional airbases inoperable.

The proposal was discussed Monday at Air Force headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, during a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief of Staff Air Marshal Tedi Rizalihadi.

Officials discussed technical, safety and security requirements to determine whether the highway sections can safely accommodate military aircraft.

The Air Force will conduct further field assessments and technical preparations before implementing the alternative runway plan, Suadnyana said.
