Job growth grinds to halt as consumers, employers lose confidence
By John W. Schoen
Senior producer, msnbc.com, updated 6/3/2011 7:08:40 PM ET

Policymakers, investors and economic forecasters are hoping that a sharp slowdown in economic growth last month was only a speed bump on an already bumpy road to recovery.

Because otherwise the ride could get a whole lot rougher.

(1)Slow pace of inflation growth may hold RBA hand on interest rates:-?
Enda Curran From: Dow Jones Newswires June 06, 2011 10:52AM

A LEADING private sector estimate of consumer inflation in Australia continued to rise in May, though at a slower pace, probably offering comfort for the Reserve Bank to keep rates steady for now.

Rising costs for rent, fruit, vegetables, books and magazines were offset by cheaper tobacco, alcohol, household appliances and holiday travel.

(2)Rate hike looms as judgment on budget:-?
David Uren From: The Australian June 06, 2011 12:00AM

THE government is facing the nightmare prospect of the Reserve Bank lifting rates tomorrow, just four weeks after it delivered the federal budget.

The decision of the board hangs on a knife edge. Strong business investment plans and record iron ore and coal prices support the bank's belief that higher rates are needed.

The bank is expected to ignore last week's huge contraction in the economy in the March quarter as national accounts figures revealed that household consumption remains robust.

Tatyana Shumsky From: Dow Jones Newswires June 04, 2011 12:04PM

GOLD prices pushed higher on weak US employment data and renewed investor concerns about a 'double-dip' recession in the US.

The most actively traded contract, for August delivery, settled up $US9.70, or 0.6 per cent, at $US1542.40 a troy ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

(1)Strong franc threatens homespun manufacturing:-?
May 29, 2011 - 10:17
by Matthew Allen, swissinfo.ch

Manufacturers are shifting a greater share of investments out of Switzerland with the dollar in the doldrums and the euro plunging to record lows against the franc.

Renewed fears that Greece might default on its debts has sparked a fresh wave of euro weakening while the dollar continues to trade way below parity against the franc. A single euro cost just under SFr1.22 on May 27 and the dollar just SFr0.85.

(1)IMF forecasts Japan economy to shrink this year:-?
(AFP, Jun 09)

The International Monetary Fund said Japan's economy will shrink 0.7 percent this year due to the earthquake and tsunami disasters, but forecast growth to bounce back in 2012 as rebuilding gets under way.

It also said Wednesday that Tokyo raise its sales tax next year to help finance reconstruction projects and rein in its bulging national debt, the highest among advanced economies.

The IMF slashed Japan's economic forecast from its previous projection for 1.4 percent growth in April.

(2)Are we prepared for a multipolar economy?:-?
By JUSTIN YIFU LIN and MANSOOR DAILAMI

WASHINGTON — At a time when the global economy is suffering from a crisis of confidence, structural imbalances, and subdued growth prospects, looking ahead 10 years to predict the course of development requires careful modeling and something beyond sagacity. What is needed is a multifaceted approach that combines a sense of history with careful analysis of current forces such as the shift in the balance of global growth toward the emerging world.

(1)No rate hikes in 2011: TD:)
Jonathan Ratner Jun 14, 2011 – 9:44 AM ET | Last Updated: Jun 14, 2011 10:20 AM ET

Economic risks, well-anchored inflation expectations and a strong Canadian dollar have prompted TD Economics to push back its interest rate hike forecast. Rather than an increase from the Bank of Canada in 2011, TD now believes the tightening of monetary policy will arrive early in 2012, with the overnight rate climbing to just 2.00% by the middle of the year.

“With the U.S. Federal Reserve on hold, the Bank of Canada is also constrained in raising interest rates, as widening interest rate spreads would boost the Canadian dollar that is already above parity,” said Craig Alexander, TD’s chief economist.

(2)Saudi oil spare capacity shrinking fast:)
Reuters Jun 14, 2011 – 8:05 AM ET | Last Updated: Jun 14, 2011 10:20 AM ET
By Barbara Lewis and Braden Reddall

LONDON/HOUSTON — Saudi Arabia’s cushion of spare oil capacity is thinning far faster than widely believed, threatening to trigger price spikes in the months ahead, energy industry experts warned at the Reuters Global Energy and Climate Summit on Monday.

Concerns are growing over the kingdom’s ability to pump more oil beyond an anticipated summer boost, leaving the world exposed to any further unexpected disruptions. The world’s top exporter promised to produce as much oil as the market needs after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries last week failed to reach a deal.

The Euro continues to plunge as policy makers seem to be falling farther and farther behind the curve and the situation in Greece spins out of control.

What's next for the single currency? Greece situation spinning out of control The situation for Greece is spinning out of control from within and from without. Today, Greek PM is scrambling to reshuffle his cabinet in an effort to win a parliamentary confidence vote that will determine whether he can continue to govern and get the votes for the latest austerity package aimed at satisfying international creditors. (The situation is very fluid – this was the expectation

SHOULD YOU BUY THE EURO AGAINST THE DOLLAR!!!!:D

It depends on the economic climate in Europe.

The strength of the Euro is closely related to the fiscal health of all members of the European Union. Your view on the future of the PIIGS nations (Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain) can help mould your trading strategy.

The Forex Trade

If you believe Europe has outlined a sound bailout plan for the ailing members of the EU, then you could buy the Euro against the dollar.

If you believe members of the EU will default on their debt, dragging the collective European economy down, you could sell the Euro against the dollar.

(1)July 13th 2011: 5 reasons why the Euro isn’t trading much weaker:)

Amid the lurid media headlines during the past few days of Euro-zone crisis, panic and collapse, the surprising feature is not that the Euro has fallen – the big shock is that the currency is not trading substantially weaker. There is increasing evidence of longer-term forces at play which are keeping the Euro afloat. If we rewind just over 12 months ago to when the Greek crisis first erupted, the Euro hit a low below 1.20 against the dollar. Despite the debt crisis being much more severe this time and the Euro’s future in very serious doubt, EUR/USD is still close to 1.40.

(2)Don't bank on stress relief in Europe:-?
By Colin Barr July 14, 2011: 6:33 AM ET

Friday is shaping up as another missed opportunity to defuse the European debt crisis.

The European Banking Authority will release results on the latest bank stress tests, which will show how much money overextended governments will have to pony up to support their vulnerable lenders. But the market is unlikely to heave a sigh of relief at those results until European finance ministers are willing to try a more lasting solution to the debt crisis in Greece -- and it looks like they are still not ready yet.
