(1)Stimulating the economy
Monday, May 9, 2011

Economic reports made public April 28 by the government and the Bank of Japan underscore the rapid deterioration of the Japanese economy in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami and the Fukushima nuclear plant accidents.

A trade and industry ministry report states that the industrial and mining production index for March sank a record 15.3 percent from the previous month — surpassing the 8.6 percent drop in February 2009 after the Lehman Brothers shock. Overall production activities fell 31.9 percent in the devastated areas and 13.5 percent in other areas.

(2)Fixing Japan’s Fiscal Mess:-?
May 12, 2011

By James Pach
Massively indebted, Japan needs new funds to pay for recovery efforts and kick-start its economy. It's time to be innovative.

Pity the Japanese economic policymaker. Even before the triple whammy of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis struck in March, Japan was facing the mother of all fiscal headaches. With public debt climbing to new heights, the government was facing an increasingly urgent dilemma: should it try to improve public finances with fiscal austerity measures, or continue to spend in the hope that the persistently weak economy would rebound.

(3)BOJ warns economy in severe state, beating deflation not enough
By Leika Kihara – Tue May 17, 12:37 am ET

TOKYO (Reuters) – Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa said the country's economy was in a very severe state due to damage from the March earthquake, signaling that the central bank was sticking to its ultra-loose monetary policy bias.

Shirakawa repeated that the BOJ would do its utmost to beat deflation but added that any price rises needed to be driven by solid economic growth, emphasizing the need for policies to boost Japan's potential growth.

CAD - Canadian Dollar!!!!

News ..........

(1)Canadian Dollar Goes Up Together with Crude
Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

The Canadian dollar extended its rally today, rising for fourth day against its US counterpart, as commodities, including crude oil, reversed the downward trend and rallied.

Crude oil reached the highest price in four days on speculation that flooding of the Mississippi River will disrupt refineries. Valero Energy Corp., the biggest US refiner, has already reduced operations at its Memphis plant to about 80 percent of capacity because of the flooding. Contract for delivery of crude in June rose 0.8 percent to $103.41 per barrel. Crude oil is the biggest export of Canada.
