Traders Now Short The Swiss Franc; Remain Bullish On Dollar -CFTC:-?

Traders held a net short position in the Swiss franc for the first time in more than a year and maintained a relatively robust position betting on the dollar's broad strength, as of Oct. 4, according to weekly data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission released Friday.

Net short Swiss franc bets--or speculative traders betting the currency will fall against the dollar--totaled $151.3 million. Though a relatively small number, it was the first time traders held any net anti-franc bet since July 6, 2010. The CFTC's weekly report released Friday shows speculative investors' positions in major currencies held against the dollar as of Tuesday.

Bets in favor of the franc had slowly evaporated over the past month after the Swiss National Bank said it would set a floor in the euro-franc exchange rate, which ended up weakening the franc against nearly all currencies.:-?

The pro-franc positioning completely disappeared as speculation picked up that the SNB would raise that floor even higher and drag down the currency even more.:-?

Japan opposition calls for BOJ easing, fx intervention:-?

Oct 6 (Reuters) - Japan's main opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) urged the government and central bank on Thursday to intervene more frequently in the currency market and ease monetary policy further to curb the harmful effect of a strong yen on the economy.:-?

The request was made by a group of LDP lawmakers who urged inclusion of steps to help Japanese firms cope with a strong yen in a 12 trillion yen ($156 billion) extra budget the government aims to submit to parliament this month.

They handed the proposals to Finance Minister Jun Azumi and other cabinet members.

The LDP, which together with other opposition parties controls the upper house and can block bills, has agreed to consult with the ruling Democratic Party on the extra budget, which is to help finance reconstruction from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. But it was unclear if it would help enact the measure in a split parliament.

BOJ chief sticks to recovery view amid euro debt:-?

TOKYO (Reuters) - Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa said on Thursday that solid growth in emerging markets will continue to underpin Japan's economy, suggesting the central bank will stick to its forecast of a moderate recovery when its board meets next week.

But he reiterated that the BOJ will "act appropriately" by closely monitoring the economic and price outlook, a sign the central bank is ready to ease monetary policy further if risks from abroad threaten to stall the upturn.:-?

One concern for the Japanese authorities is that the yen's persistent strength, driven by investors' flight to the safety of liquid, low-risk assets, will choke off one vital source of economic growth -- exports.:-?

Such worries spurred plans for a joint government-central bank task force that will monitor and coordinate steps aimed at tackling the yen's strength and helping to cushion its economic impact, according to a draft plan obtained by Reuters.

For now, the central bank is sticking to its guns, predicting a gradual pickup from a slump that followed the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.:-?

Japanese PM vows to combat yen's rise, announces new tax hike for reconstruction

TOKYO, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told parliament on Friday that Japan stands ready to take all measures to tackle the yen's appreciation to record highs, suggesting further intervention by Tokyo into currency markets to cool the yen's rise.

"A crisis of industrial hollowing continues in the wake of the historic appreciation of the yen," Noda said in a major policy speech at an extraordinary Diet session.

The Japanese premier was referring a recent trend of large manufacturers opting to set up shop overseas, due to cheaper parts, labor and other costs, as the rapid rise of the yen has made it hard for them to compete on a global scale while based in Japan.:-?

Japan Inc steps up shift overseas as yen stays high:-?

(Reuters) - Japan's big manufacturers led by Panasonic Corp and Nissan Motor Co Ltd are speeding up their shift overseas, in a sign corporate Japan sees the strong yen as a long-term handicap rather than a temporary blip.:-?

A sluggish home market and energy shortages following the widespread nuclear power shutdown sparked by the March 11 earthquake and ensuing atomic crisis are also tipping the balance toward investment abroad.

Buffett in Japan, spotlight on investment

(Reuters) - Octogenarian billionaire investor Warren Buffett arrived on his first visit to Japan on Monday, fanning speculation about his possible investments in the country's battered stock market.:-?

Buffett, dubbed the 'Oracle of Omaha' for his long track record as a value investor, will hold a press briefing at 4.15 p.m. (2:15 a.m. EST) after touring a factory near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant crippled by the earthquake and tsunami in March.

That disaster came just days before Buffett had been due to make his maiden visit to Japan. At the time, the head of Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N) said the earthquake was one of those extraordinary events that created buying opportunities. In May, he said he would be "delighted" to invest in Japan.:-?

Yen Weakens Against Most Major Peers After U.S. Credit Ratings Affirmed

The yen weakened against most major counterparts after ratings companies affirmed the U.S. credit grades, sapping demand for Japan’s currency as a haven.

The yen was bought earlier after a U.S. Congress budget supercommittee failed to reach agreement on reducing the budget deficit. The euro gained before data that economist say will show European consumer confidence sank to a two-year low.

South Korea’s won slid as Asian stocks fell, reducing the allure of currencies linked to global growth. India’s rupee declined to a record against the dollar.

Yen's current strength still manageable: 'Mr Yen':-?

The yen`s recent strength may be unsettling many Japanese companies, especially export firms. However, Japan`s former Vice Minister for Finance Eisuke Sakakibara, tells CNBC he is not concerned about the currency`s current level of around 77 to the US dollar.

"In terms of the real effect on the exchange rate, this rate is not as high as 79 in 1995," said Sakakibara, who is also known as "Mr Yen" for his influential comments on the currency in the past.

While Sakakibara acknowledged that a strong yen has hurt earnings at domestic firms, he believes dollar-yen in the 74-78 range is still manageable by most exporters. "If you are talking about the exchange rate hindering the volume of exports, because of the rate, that is not the case at this moment," he said.

"If the Japanese yen goes into the 60s, then that may be a problem for some of the Japanese exporting companies," he added.

Yen Gains as Japanese Stocks, Won Decline on Europe Outlook

Nov. 24 (Bloomberg) -- The yen rose against most of its major peers, while Japanese stocks and South Korea's won declined after a German bund auction fell short of its target and Asian companies cut earnings outlooks.

The yen appreciated against 12 of its 16 most actively traded counterparts. The euro climbed 0.3 percent to $1.3379, recouping some of the 1.2 percent slump yesterday, when German yields climbed 23 basis points and the cost to insure European government debt rose to a record.
