Japan Azumi: Will not hesitate to respond to FX moves

(Reuters) - Japan will not hesitate to respond to speculative currency moves to shield exporters from a strong yen, its finance minister said on Friday, as he expressed frustration with European inaction on containing its debt crisis.

Unless European leaders detail how they will limit their sovereign debt woes, which started two years ago, it will be difficult for turbulence in markets to subside, Jun Azumi said.

The yen has largely held steady versus the dollar after Japan intervened and sold its currency last month, but a sudden spike higher could fray the nerves of policymakers trying to steer the economy toward recovery following a large natural disaster in March.

Swiss central bank sees continued recession risk despite franc falling against euro:-?

GENEVA — The vice president of the Swiss National Bank says Switzerland’s economy still risks falling into recession despite the Swiss franc falling back against the euro.:-?

Thomas Jordan was quoted Sunday by the Zurich weekly newspaper SonntagsZeitung as saying the nation’s economy “is entering a difficult phase with a low or possibly even slightly negative growth rate.”

BOJ Shirakawa warns Japan economic outlook severe:-?

NAGOYA, Japan (Reuters) - Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa on Monday warned the country's economy will remain in a severe state for now as Europe's sovereign debt crisis and yen rises cloud the outlook, signaling the central bank's readiness to boost monetary stimulus further if risks to the recovery heighten.:-?

He also said Japan will continue to seek G7 and G20 understanding over its action to curb sharp yen rises, stressing that Tokyo's latest intervention was aimed at curbing excessive and disorderly currency moves.:-?

"To believe that deflation can be solved by printing money alone would be considering the problem in too simplistic terms," Shirakawa said.

"What's most important is to strengthen the growth potential for Japan's economy," he said.

Speculators Bet Net $14.4 Billion Against Euro, Largest Since June 2010

Traders placed their largest wager against the euro since June 2010 last week, betting a net $14.4 billion that the beleaguered euro zone will stay mired in the sovereign-debt crisis that has paralyzed it.

That position stood at 11% larger than the previous week, or a net 85,068 contracts as of Nov. 22, data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's weekly report on the commitments of traders showed.

Speculators were more optimistic about the dollar's prospects, betting a net $11.5 billion that the greenback will appreciate, up 23% from the prior week.

In the yen, the market held a net bet on the currency's expected rise worth $7 billion, or 43,180 contracts, up 28% from the week before.

Traders continue to be wary of the Swiss National Bank, which has vowed to act swiftly to weaken the Swiss franc if the currency strengthens too much. The market held a net wager against the franc worth $802 million, or 5,870 contracts.

The Australian and New Zealand dollars, both of which often fluctuate with commodity prices, saw bets in their favor cut by nearly one-third last week, although investors continue to think those currencies will appreciate. The Canadian dollar is seen as likely to fall, with a net wager against it of $2.1 billion, 26% higher than last week's pessimistic bet.

The market also views the British pound as vulnerable, increasing by 10% the wager against it to $3.6 billion, the data showed.

The CFTC's report measures major currencies held against the dollar. The data, usually released on Fridays for the week ended Tuesday, were delayed because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

TOKYO, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Japan's foreign reserves hit an all-time high in November after the government spent a record sum intervening in currency markets to curb the yen's gains and help the export-led economy.:-?

Japan has intervened in foreign exchange markets at least three times this year, battling strength in the yen stemming from the euro zone's debt woes and a stuttering global economy.

Finance Minister Jun Azumi has said repeatedly that Japan will not hesitate to take decisive steps against speculative currency moves to protect exporters from a firmer yen.:-?

The government "needs to consider that rises in currency reserves led by intervention mean increases in Japan's borrowing as the nation has to issue financing bills for intervention, and it should also consider unrealised losses," said Tohru Sasaki, head of Japan rates and FX research at JPMorgan Chase Bank in Tokyo.

"I doubt how effective currency intervention is ... but Japan may intervene again if the yen surges to a record high (vs the dollar). The global economic situation is focused on Europe's debt troubles and it's not about the yen," Sasaki said.

Swiss reluctant to change franc's floor:-?

WARSAW -- The Swiss monetary authorities face a dilemma between action for a weaker Swiss franc and a strong reluctance to change the floor for its safe-haven currency too often, said Peter Maurer, the country's deputy foreign minister, Tuesday.

"From the economic and financial point of view, a higher rate than the currently acceptable minimum of CHF1.20 to the euro is justifiable," he's quoted as saying, in an interview with Polish daily Rzeczpospolita, when asked about the possibility of raising the floor to CHF1.30. "At the same time, there's a strong reluctance to change the level too often."

The Swiss National Bank on Sept. 6 said it won't allow the euro to drop below CHF1.20, adding it would defend this level with utmost determination. The move came after the euro nearly hit parity against the franc in August.

Maurer said the floor at the current level is acceptable for Switzerland's economic partners, although "if the SNB listened only to our exporters, for sure it would increase the level, but we're also listening to our partners abroad." The SNB's decision to set the floor at CHF1.20 to the euro has brought a positive stabilizing effect, he added.

Euro falls to four-month low versus Swiss franc

Jan 23 (Reuters) - The euro fell to a four-month low against the Swiss franc on Monday, tracking a move lower in dollar/Swiss as the greenback came under broad pressure on tentative hopes of a Greek debt deal.

Against the Swiss franc, the euro fell to 1.20605 on trading platform EBS. The single currency was at its lowest level since September 2011.
