G-7 Ends Without Objection to Yen Action:-?
By Toru Fujioka - Sep 11, 2011 12:00 AM GMT+0800

Japanese Finance Minister Jun Azumi ended his first Group of Seven meeting without his counterparts objecting to his pledge to take “bold actions” to stem yen gains, paving the way for a fresh intervention if he deems it necessary.:o

“We will continue to closely monitor developments and we will take bold actions, especially against speculative trading,” Azumi said after G-7 finance chiefs met in Marseille, France. “No one was opposed to my explanation. I think I gained an understanding of our stance on foreign-exchange rates.”:-?

Concern the currency gain is hurting economic recovery by crimping exports may be mounting after a report showed the world’s third-largest economy contracted more than the government initially estimated in the second quarter. Azumi attended the G-7 talks about a week after becoming Japan’s eighth finance minister since the start of 2008.

“We expect Japan’s authorities will act again unilaterally” if the yen tests its post-war high, said Mansoor Mohi-uddin, UBS AG’s global head of currency strategy in Singapore. “Investors should instead keep favoring the dollar now when they seek safe-haven currencies.”:-?

Azumi asked U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner to understand the challenges caused by the strength of the yen when they met yesterday, a Japanese finance ministry official said on the condition of anonymity, citing government policy.

‘Consult Closely’:-?

The G-7 policy makers said in a statement that they will “consult closely in regard to actions in exchange markets and will cooperate as appropriate.” While they said they prefer markets to set currencies, they reiterated their long-held view that volatility and disorderly movements threaten stability.
“As this falls short of any commitment to undertake coordinated action in currency markets, investors are likely to react with disappointment when trading resumes on Monday,” UBS’s Mohi-uddin said.

The yen touched a 10-year high against euro last week as investors sought a haven from Europe’s sovereign debt crisis after German officials said they are considering plans to shore up their banks if Greece defaults.

“The root cause of the strong yen is global investors’ preference for safe assets,”:) Bank of Japan (8301) Governor Masaaki Shirakawa told reporters during the G-7 meeting. “I told them Japan expects them to firmly address the fiscal issues,” he said, referring to his G-7 counterparts.

‘Considerably High’:-?

The yen has retreated after rising to a post-war high of 75.95 against the dollar, closing last week at 77.61 in New York. The exchange rate is nevertheless ’’considerably high,’’ Economy Policy Minister Motohisa Furukawa said last week. The nation’s largest manufacturers including Toyota Motor Corp. and Sony Corp. based their business plans for this fiscal year at an average of 82.59 per dollar, according to the central bank’s quarterly survey in July.

Gross domestic product shrank at an annualized 2.1 percent rate in the three months ended June 30, more than the 1.3 percent contraction reported last month, the Cabinet Office said yesterday.

Rintaro Tamaki, Japan’s former top currency official who orchestrated interventions last September and March, said the language in the G-7 statement indicates countries want Japan to build a consensus before intervening, indicating the nation may face disagreement over yen sales in the future.

Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said before the G-7 meeting he was concerned about moves by the Japanese and Swiss to stem gains in their currencies after the Swiss central bank said last week it will keep the euro above 1.20 francs and will defend that line with “utmost determination.”:-?

No Signal:-?

While the lack of objection to Japan’s currency stance doesn’t signal approval for unilateral intervention, the country’s authorities aren’t ruling out selling the yen to curb excessive moves, another finance ministry official said, also on condition of anonymity.

Japan intervened on Aug. 4 and sold 4.51 trillion yen ($58 billion) of its currency last month, the biggest monthly sales since 2004. The G-7 economies jointly intervened in March for the first time in more than a decade after a soaring yen threatened Japan’s recovery from an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster.

Former Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda, who is now the premier, conducted three rounds of interventions in the past 12 months. Azumi has said he will inherit Noda’s stance.:-?

Jefferies Describes The Endgame: Europe Is Finished
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 09/14/2011 00:34 -0400

The most scathing report describing in exquisite detail the coming financial apocalypse in Europe comes not from some fringe blogger or soundbite striving politician, ...

"The bottom line is that it looks like a Lehman like event is about to be unleashed on Europe WITHOUT an effective TARP like structure fully in place. :-?

...

The road map for Europe is still 2008 in the US, with the end game a country by country socialization of their commercial banks. The fact is that the Germans are NOT going to pay for pan European structure to recap French and Italian banks - even though it is probably a more cost effective solution for both the German banks and taxpayers....Expect a massive policy response in Europe and a move towards financial market nationlaization that will make the US experience look like a walk in the park. " :-?

Must read for anyone who wants a glimpse of the endgame. Oh, good luck China. You'll need it.

Full Report:

In most ...

Well specifically, there are only a handful of insolvent sovereign European borrowers, while there are millions of bankrupt subprime households. This has been THE key factor in understanding how the differing policy responses to the two debt crisis have evolved.:-?

... Of couse, the lenders (ie the banks) have always been dead men walking!:o

.. ...

The bottom line is that it looks like a Lehman like event is about to be unleashed on Europe WITHOUT an effective TARP like structure fully in place. ...

Rather it looks like we will get 17 TARPs - one for each country. That is going to require a US style socialization of each banking system - with many WAMUs, Wachovias, AIGs and IndyMacs along the way.

The road map for Europe is still 2008 in the US, with the end game a country by country socialization of their commercial banks. The fact is that the Germans are NOT going to pay for pan European structure to recap French and Italian banks - even though it is probably a more cost effective solution for both the German banks and taxpayers.

.. The most likely scenario for these countries is full bank nationalization followed by exit and currency reintroduction. Bring on the Drachma TARP!!

...

There is a reason why German CDS is 90bps and USA CDS is 50bps – Bunds are not a safe haven in this world – and there is no place in Europe that will be immune from this dislocation. Expect a massive policy response in Europe and a move towards financial market nationlaization that will make the US experience look like a walk in the park.

...

Importantly, France GDP is only 2 trillion and in bank balance sheets are some 400% of that number. The banks are dead men walking with massive leverage to both home country income as well as assets. ...

Forex - AUD/USD weekly outlook: September 19-23 :)
Date: 18 September 2011
Contributed by ForexPros

Forexpros – Last week saw the Australian dollar drop to a five-week low against its U.S. counterpart mid-week, before trimming a weekly loss as the greenback came under pressure after the European Central Bank announced measures to boost dollar liquidity.

AUD/USD hit 1.0177 on Wednesday, the lowest since August 11; the pair subsequently consolidated at 1.0357 by close of trade on Friday, shedding 0.69% on the week, the second consecutive weekly decline.

The pair was likely to find support at 1.0177, Wednesday’s low and short-term resistance at 1.0440, the high of September 12.

The Aussie fell to a five-week low on Wednesday after the Australian Bureau of Statistics announced core inflation averaged a seasonally adjusted rise of 0.6% in the second quarter, down from a previously reported increase of 0.9%.

The downward revision added to concerns that the Reserve Bank of Australia would cut rates in the coming months. :-?

The Aussie regained strength on Thursday as risk sentiment improved after the European Central Bank announced that it would provide additional dollar liquidity to euro area lenders in a move coordinated with the Federal Reserve and other major central banks.

The U.S. dollar came under further pressure after government data showed that U.S. retail sales were unchanged in August, following a smaller-than-expected 0.3% gain in July, while a separate report showed that U.S. jobless claims rose more-than-expected.

Other reports showed that U.S. consumer prices rose slightly more than expected last month while manufacturing activity in New York and Philadelphia contracted in September.

The Aussie edged higher on Friday, but gains were limited after a meeting of European Union finance ministers in Poland failed to produce an agreement on how to resolve the region’s debt woes.:-?

Fears over a possible Greek debt default also weighed on sentiment as EU ministers postponed a decision to release the next tranche of aid to the debt-laden country until next month.

In the coming week, investors will be watching the outcome of the Federal Reserve’s extended policy setting meeting on Wednesday for any signs that the bank is looking at providing fresh monetary stimulus to support the economy, while developments in the euro zone also look likely to remain in focus.:-?

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of Australia is to publish the minutes of its September 6 policy-setting meeting, when it left rates unchanged at 4.75% for the ninth straight meeting.

Ahead of the coming week, Forex Pros has compiled a list of these and other significant events likely to affect the markets. The guide skips Monday, as there are no relevant events on the day.

NZD recovers against US:-?
Monday, 19 September 2011 - 9:19am

The NZD recovered against the USD on Friday night, helped by the modest improvement in risk sentiment. NZD/USD gained around a cent over the evening to be trading at 0.8300 currently. The NZD trade-weighted index gained around 0.8% to 72.40.

Our NZD/USD "fair value" model continues to suggest the currency is overvalued based on short-term fundamentals. Over the past week, the implied "fair value" range has remained unchanged at 0.7350 to 0.7550 currently.

NZD/AUD made it to an overnight high of 0.8040, but has fallen back to 0.8000 currently. The current level is broadly consistent with the implied range from our NZD/AUD "fair value" model of
0.7730 to 0.7930. While we have pushed out our call for the first RBNZ hike to March 2012, we still have a total of 125bps of hikes pencilled-in over the next 12-months. This contrasts to our NAB colleagues who are calling for one rate hike from the RBA over the same period. As such, we still maintain our call for NZD/AUD to gradually appreciate to 0.8500 by September 2012.

Looking to the week ahead, we have the Q2 GDP report due for release on Thursday. Following a run of disappointing partials, we now expect a modest 0.2% expansion (1.4% y/y). The market expectation is for 0.6%q/q. On Wednesday, we expect the bi-monthly Fonterra dairy auction to remain solid. Shortly after this, we anticipate the current account data to show a slight slimming in the annual deficit to 4% of GDP. Early Thursday morning, RBNZ Governor Bollard is due to speak at an Australasian Debt Market Forum in New York.

Forex - USD/JPY dips as EZ fears support safe haven demand:)
Published on Tue, Sep 20, 2011 at 13:16 | Source : Forexpros.com

Forexpros - The U.S. dollar slipped against the yen on Tuesday, as mounting fears over the debt crisis in the euro zone supported safe haven buying, but investors remained wary about the possibility of further intervention by Japan to weaken the yen.:-?

USD/JPY hit 76.46 during late Asian trade, the daily low; the pair subsequently consolidated at 76.51, slipping 0.10%.

The pair was likely to find short-term support at 76.32, Monday's low and resistance at 76.97, Monday's high.

Fears over the euro zone debt crisis mounted after Standard & Poor's downgraded its debt rating on Italy by one notch, citing weak economic growth and increasing political difficulties.

Meanwhile, talks to discuss whether Greece has done enough to access its next tranche of bailout funds ended Monday without reaching an agreement. Greece's finance minister said the discussions would continue late Tuesday, adding that some work still needed to be done.

The yen remained largely unchanged after Japan's government unveiled a series of measures to soften the impact of the surging yen on the country's largely export driven economy.:-?

The government said the plan aims to "soften the pain" from the strong yen and keep it from leading to more "hollowing out" of Japanese industry. The government also said it expects the Bank of Japan to take

Forex: GBP/JPY recovery, capped at 118.00:o
Fri, Sep 23 2011, 13:37 GMT | FXstreet.com

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – The GBP/JPY is rising on Friday after falling 320 pips in the previous two trading days. The pair bottomed yesterday at 116.80 but it bounced to the upside after the beginning of today’s Asian session and rose back above 117.00. During the European session Cable extended gains but the recovery was capped by the 118.00 region.

The GBP/JPY retreated from the highs but found support at 117.15 and bounced back to the upside, approaching daily highs. Currently is trading around 117.60/70, holding upside momentum as stocks in Europe are moving off session lows.

According to analysts at MIG Bank the pair is showing patterns in daily and hourly timeframes, that warn of exhaustion. “It is thus deemed safer to monitor price action from the sidelines for now,” say analysts. They point out that further weakness would open up a projection near 115.25.

Tension over exchange rates:-?
WHAT ARE WE TO DO
By TAN SRI LIN SEE-YAN, The Star, Saturday September 24, 2011

Amid heightened fears over eurozone sovereign debt risks and increasing concerns about the health of the United States and eurozone economies, worried investors have flocked to the safety of haven currencies, especially the Swiss franc, and gold.:)

...

The Swiss franc:-?

Switzerland's national currency, the CHF, should be used to speculative attacks by now. So much so in the 1970s, the Swiss National Bank (SNB) was forced to impose negative interest rates on foreign investors (who have to pay banks to accept their CHF deposits).:o

...

The devil's trade-off:-?

As I see it, the Swiss really has no other options. SNB has been attempting to drive down the CHF by intervening in the money markets but with little lasting effect. “The current massive over-valuation of the CHF poses an acute threat to the Swiss economy,” where exports accounted for 35% of its gross domestic product. The new policy would help exports and help job security. As of now, there is no support from Europe to drive the euro higher.

...

New haven: the Nokkie':-?

SNB's new policy stance has sent ripples through currency markets. In Europe, it drove the Norwegian krone (Nokkie) to an eight-year high against the euro as investors sought out alternative safe havens. Since money funds must have a minimum exposure in Europe and, with most European currencies discredited and quality bonds yielding next to nothing, the Nokkie became a principal beneficiary. It offers 3% return for three-month money-market holdings.

...

Yen resists the pressure:-?

SNB's placement of a “cap” to weaken the CHF has encouraged risk-adverse investors who sought comfort in the franc to turn to the yen instead. So far, the yen has stayed below its record high reached in mid-August. But it remains well above the exporters' comfort level.

...

Reprieve for the yuan:-?

I sense one of the first casualties of the failing global economic expansion is renewed pressure to further appreciate the yuan. For China, August was a good month to adjust strong exports, high inflation and intense international pressure. As a result, the yuan appreciated against the USD by more than 11%, up from an average of about 5% in the first seven months of the year. However, the surge had begun to fade in the first half of September.

...

Growing stress:-?

With the euro under growing stress from sovereign debt problems, the market's focus is turning back to Japan (prompting a new plan to deal with a strong yen), to non-eurozone nations (Norway, Denmark, Sweden and possibly the United Kingdom) and on to Asia (already the ringgit, rupiah, baht and won are coming under pressure on concerns over uncertainty and capital flight). Similarly, Brazil's recent actions to limit currency appreciation highlights the dilemma faced by fast growing economies (Turkey, Chile and Russia) since allowing currency appreciation limits domestic overheating but also undermines competitiveness.

...

Frankly, IMF meetings and G-20 gatherings don't have a track record of getting things done. I don't expect anything different this time. The outlook just doesn't look good.

Japan can't act like Swiss on currency rise-MOF:-?
By Leika Kihara, WASHINGTON, Sept 23 | Fri Sep 23, 2011 8:48pm EDT

(Reuters) - Japan cannot curb rises in its currency like Switzerland has done by setting a cap on its currency and pledging to defend it with intervention, as that would effectively mean abandoning monetary policy independence, a senior Japanese finance ministry official said on Friday.

Deputy vice finance minister Masatsugu Asakawa also said the country's priority should be to beat deflation which is keeping upward pressure on the yen.

"Logically speaking, as long as deflation goes on, there will be continuous pressure for the yen to rise," Asakawa said in a seminar hosted by the International Monetary Fund.

He declined to comment on the appropriate level of the yen and shrugged off the view Japan should be as bold in countering currency rises as Switzerland, which like Japan saw its currency appreciate on safe haven demand from risk-shy investors.

"Switzerland decided to abandon its independence on monetary policy. In Japan, that is simply not an option to take," he said.

The Swiss central bank earlier this month decided to set an exchange rate cap on the soaring franc and promised it would defend it with unlimited currency purchases.

Japan also intervened last month to stem sharp rises in the yen, but just for one day spending roughly 4.5 trillion yen.

That has not prevented the yen from hitting a record high against the dollar and multi-year highs against the euro, moves policy-makers fret could hurt the export-reliant economy.

Tokyo has repeatedly threatened to step into the market again to counter yen rises. But as a G7 member committed to market-determined exchange rates and with an economy much bigger than Switzerland's, Japan feels it cannot intervene unlimitedly even if rises in the yen were a concern. [ID:nL3E7KD46X]

Asakawa also warned against complacency on Japan's huge public debt, saying it would be dangerous to assume that bond yields will stay low as long as Japanese government bonds (JGBs) are held mostly by domestic investors.
