KUALA LUMPUR: There were tears as they walked up the stage to receive awards on behalf of their fathers or brothers who were killed while protecting Bukit Kepong in 1950. There was a sense of gladness knowing that those who sacrificed their lives were national heroes.
Jariah Judin, 61, said her mother was two months pregnant with her when her father, Lance Corporal Judin Omar, died.
"I grew up knowing that my father was shot dead. Our lives were difficult. I saw my mother struggling to feed the family. We missed our father so much.
"He might be a national hero, but the incident took my dad from me even before I was born," said Jariah after receiving an award on behalf of her late father for his deeds in Bukit Kepong.
The awards were given to 16 families whose members had died during the fierce battle between locals and communist guerillas in defending the Bukit Kepong police station.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak greeted the family members before presenting the awards during the Wanita, Putera and Puteri Umno Raya open house yesterday.
Ahmad Jamil said his father, Sergeant Jamil Mohd Shah, was 35 years old when he was shot dead by the communists.
While angry over the incident, he was, however, happy "the government honoured the sacrifice of my father today".
Mohd Mokhtar Yassin, 65, said the awards were long overdue but he thanked Umno and Barisan Nasional for the recognition given to his late father.
Rahimah Ibrahim, 68, said she found it difficult to talk about the incident.
"I was two months old when my father died. I have never met my father. He died defending the country from the communists. I am proud of him but sad he left us so early in life."
