AMANAH Saham Nasional Bhd (ASNB), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), will pay a total of RM777.53 million to Amanah Saham Wawasan 2020 (ASW 2020) unitholders for the year ending August 31 2010, about 32.3 per cent higher than last year.

This works out to an income distribution of 6.35 sen per unit for the fund this year. In 2009, total payment stood at RM587.7 million."The income distribution this year will benefit 892,825 unit holders which currently hold 13.1 billion units of ASW 2020," said PNB chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid.

ASNB paid a dividend of 6.3 sen per unit last year, the lowest based on the fund's history chart from 1999.

For the 11 months until August 11 this year, the fund received a total of 20,226 new accountholders, while net investments received during the year increased by 2.09 billion or 18.98 per cent. Ahmad Sarji was speaking at the ASW 2020 dividend announcement in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

He said the income distribution this year is being calculated based on the average monthly minimum balance held throughout the financial year beginning September 1 2009 until August 31 this year. "Up until August 6, ASW 2020 recorded a gross income of RM887.05 million," Ahmad Sarji added.

Profit from the sale of shares contributed RM454.57 million or 51.2 per cent, dividend income from investee companies contributed RM290.09 million or 32.8 per cent, and RM141.49 million or 16 per cent was derived from investment in short-term instruments and other income.

The income distribution will be reinvested in the form of new units and will automatically be credited into the unitholders' accounts on September 1. All transactions for ASW 2020 will be suspended from August 25 to August 31 to facilitate calculation of income distribution.

Speaking to reporters later, PNB president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman said it has the ability to pay 7 sen per unit for ASW 2020 this year but decided to retain and bring forward the reserves of RM158 million to next year.

On reports that conglomerate Sime Darby Bhd would post its worst loss, he said PNB will leave it to the latter's board to take the next course of action.

Hamad Kama Piah added that it is normal for a company to face difficult times in doing business.
