Arsenal transfer update: Wenger busy with under 36 hours left

In:

Defence

Per Mertesacker – The Press Association have reported that Arsenal have reached an agreement with Werder Bremen for Per Mertesacker for a fee of £8 million. Despite Mertesacker admitting last week that he is happy in Germany, it appears that he is flying to London this afternoon for a medical and to agree personal terms. Likeliness rating: 4.5/5*

Gary Cahill – It has been suggested that we risk missing out on Gary Cahill because Spurs are about to put forward a last-minute bid. Despite being one of the longest-running transfer sagas of the summer, Cahill to Arsenal is looking increasingly unlikely. Likeliness rating: 2/5

Alex – We brought you news earlier today that Arsène Wenger has contacted Chelsea about the availability of Alex, who will most probably struggle to secure a place in the Chelsea starting line-up this season. Chelsea have apparently said that he can leave for the right price, but I believe that Wenger simply enquired about his availability in case the deal for Mertesacker were to fall through. Likeliness rating 3/5

André Santos – Fenerbache full-back André Santos is also having a medical with Arsenal this afternoon after the two clubs agreed a £6.2 million transfer fee late last night. Having lost Gaël Clichy earlier in the summer, Wenger was keen to sign a new left-back that can slip straight into the starting line-up. Likeliness rating: 4.5/5

Midfield:

Florent Malouda – We have been linked with a last-minute swoop for Florent Malouda, who was Chelsea’s player of the season 2 years ago, and has become one of the most important members of their first-team. André Villas Boas has already confirmed that Malouda he plans to keep hold of Malouda, so I am going to dismiss this one as pure speculation. Likeliness rating: 1/5

Yossi Benayoun – Yossi Benayoun has made only 10 appearances for Chelsea since he joined last summer (mainly due to injury). He looks unlikely to force his way into the starting line-up any time soon, especially when you consider the arrival of Juan Mata, and confirmed on Twitter that his representatives have been talking to other clubs; it appears that he is considering his options. Wenger needs a player with Premier League experience to slot into our midfield, and Yossi may be our man. It is not as unlikely as it sounds. Likeliness rating: 3.5/5

Eljero Elia – Hamburg’s Eljero Elia this morning released a statement saying that he would prefer a move to England because he believes that the Premier League suits his style of play. Elia was on the verge of agreeing a move to Juventus, but it appears that he is stalling. Wenger has been tracking him for several weeks, but is apparently unwilling to match Juve’s offer. Likeliness rating: 2/5

Mikel Arteta - It has been reported that Arsène Wenger has offered Everton manager David Moyes Nickalas Bendtner (and a bit of cash) in exchange for Mikel Arteta. However, Everton don’t want Bendtner, but may be willing to discuss a fee for Arteta. The Toffee’s are in a difficult financial position and are not able to turn down a high offer for one of their star players. Likeliness rating: 2/5

Eden Hazard – Eden Hazard has released a statement in which he has committed his future to Lille. Enough said. Likeliness rating: 0.5/5

Yann M’Vila – Arsenal have been heavily linked with Rennes midfielder Yan M’Vila this week, with suggestions that Wenger is set to make a bid this afternoon. The big talking-point is that M’Vila would ineligible to play in the Champions League as he has already appeared for Rennes in their Europa League Play-Off ties with Red Star Belgrade. However, Wenger always thinks long-term and, at 21-years-old, M’Vila will be one for the future. Likeliness rating: 4/5

Strikers

Park Chu Young – South Korea captain Park Chu Young is set to have a medical this afternoon and should be confirmed as an Arsenal player later today. Arsenal have agreed a fee with AS Monaco and I believe that this is almost a done-deal. Likeliness rating: 4.5/5

*The likeliness rating shows how likely we think it is that any given player will join Arsenal before the transfer window closes tomorrow night.

Out:

Armand Traoré – Traoré has signed a 3-year contract with QPR for a fee believed to be in the region of £1.2 million.

Nicklas Bendtner – We are leaving it a little bit late to get Bendtner off our books. Although Stoke and Sunderland have both declared interest, and there were talks about a move to Sporting Lisbon several weeks ago, it would seem that there have been no offers as of yet. Bendtner was offered to Everton in exchange for Arteta, but they don’t want him either.

Arsenal swoop for £8million German star Per Mertesacker

ARSENAL are close to completing an £8million move for Werder Bremen centre-back Per Metesacker.

The Germany international is in London to thrash out terms on an £80,000-a-week deal with the Gunners.

Mertesacke will then undergo a medical and be unveiled as an Arsenal player within the next 24 hours if he gets the all clear.

The 26-year-old is in the German squad for their Euro 2012 qualification game at home to Austria on Friday.

But national boss Joachim Loew has granted him permission to leave the training camp in order to finalise his move to the Emirates Stadium.

Loew said: "Last night I told the player 'I am giving you a free day' and I expect he will come back this evening.

"I know there was a specific offer from a club."

Mertesacker would provide much-needed height and experience at the back, standing at 6ft 6in and boasting 75 international caps.

He started his career at Hannover 96 in 2003 before moving to Bremen in a £4m deal five years ago.

Bremen general manager Klaus Allofs added: "Per has had the wish to join a big European club for some time. Arsenal was always his favourite club."

Mertesacker to have Arsenal medical today (report)

Per Mertesacker was reportedly en route to London today to undergo a medical at Arsenal.

The Gunners have been in talks with Werder Bremen over the signing of Germany defender Mertesacker, who was given permission by club and country to jet out to England.

Arsenal were also understood to be close to concluding a deal for Brazil left-back Andre Santos as they sought to revamp their defence following Sunday's humiliating 8-2 defeat at Manchester United.

The signings would be music to the ears of Gunners fans, who have long urged manager Arsene Wenger to strengthen a rearguard that has, at times, been left woefully exposed in the past year.

Mertesacker, 26, would also provide much-needed height and experience at the back, standing 6ft 6in tall and boasting 75 international caps.

Reports suggest he could be available for as little as around £8million because of Bremen's financial problems.

Wenger has long been linked with Mertesacker, who is currently on international duty.

Germany boss Joachim Low said today: "Per contacted me last night and informed me (about Arsenal's interest).

"I told the player that I would release him for the day."

Arsenal have also agreed a fee with Turkish giants Fenerbahce - reportedly £6.2million - for Santos, with the move subject to a medical and personal terms being agreed.

The 28-year-old would help fill the void left by the sales of Gael Clichy to Manchester City and Armand Traore to QPR.

South Korea captain Park Chu-Young was expected to complete his move from Monaco later today, while the Gunners have been linked with a host of other names ahead of tomorrow's transfer deadline, including Chelsea's Florent Malouda, Alex and Yossi Benayoun.

They also last week saw a bid rejected for Bolton's Gary Cahill, a pursuit they may abandon should a deal for Mertesacker be concluded.

Arsenal closes in on defensive double swoop as Germany's Per Mertesacker and Brazil's Andre Santos undergo medicals
Fenerbahce left back and Werder Bremen center back are due at the Gunners' London Colney training ground to finalize personal terms on Tuesday ahead of completing moves.

Arsenal is closing in on the signings defensive duo Andre Santos and Per Mertesacker for 16 million euros, Goal.com can confirm.

The Brazilian left back and German center back are due at Arsenal's London Colney training ground on Tuesday to undergo medicals and finalize personal terms.

Arsenal has agreed a 9 million euros fee with Werder Bremen for Mertesacker, 26, and will pay Fenerbahce 7 million euros for Santos, who is 28.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday morning, Germany manager Joachim Low revealed that he had given Mertesacker dispensation to travel to London and sign for Arsenal.

"Per knocked on my door yesterday late evening. He told me that he received an offer, I gave him one day off [to sort things out]. I expect him to be back at the German camp later," he said.

Werder general manager Klaus Allofs has confirmed that Mertesacker has long wanted to move to the Emirates. He told Sportinformationsdienst, "Per has had the wish to force his career [for] some time. He wanted to play for a big European club. Arsenal was always his favourite club."

Werder Bremen's media director Tino Polster has also stated that the defender is in England as talks continue over a move, saying, "Arsenal has sent a request to us. Both clubs are in talks. Per travelled to London."

Reports in Germany say that the 6-foot-6 Mertesacker has agreed a deal worth 90,000 euros a week while Santos is said to have negotiated an Arsenal contract worth 45,000 euros a week after they had met Fenerbahce's asking price for the attacking fullback.

Arsenal executives are busy wrapping up deals in the last two days of the window after manager Arsene Wenger acted to rescue a season that has been in danger of falling apart in the opening few weeks.

South Korea captain Park Chu-Young, 26, has completed a move for an initial 3.4 million euros - although this has yet to be announced by the club - and will beef up Wenger's striker options.

Mertesacker and Santos will also be expected to slot straight into the Arsenal team after the international break.

The German will provide the physical presence that was absent during Sunday's 8-2 humiliation against Manchester United, while Santos will leapfrog the injury-plagued Kieran Gibbs as the first-choice left back.

They will provide the experience that was so lacking at Old Trafford, where the likes of Carl Jenkinson, Johan Djourou and Laurent Koscielny were torn apart by United. The fourth member of that defence, Armand Traore, has already signed for QPR.

Arsenal fails in move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Goetze

Teenager's agent Volker Struth insisted to Goal.com that his client will remain with the Bundesliga side for the 'next two years' as Gunners miss out on coveted German

Arsenal has failed in a bid to sign Germany wonderkid Mario Goetze from Borussia Dortmund.

The Londoners have been one of a number of leading European clubs whose interest in the 19-year-old has received short shrift from the Bundesliga champions during the transfer window.

"Mario will stay at Dortmund, for sure, the next two years. There is no chance of him going to another club this window," Goetze's agent Volker Struth told Goal.com.

He added, "This is because he is so young and it is too early in his career for him. The club, the player and his family, we are all of one mind that it is better for him to stay there because he is happy at Dortmund."

Struth would not comment on the extent of Arsenal's interest but it is believed its contact with the Bundesliga club did not materialize in a formal offer for a player who is valued at between 28-34 million euros.

Manchester United has also been strongly linked with the darling of German football, who has already made his mark on the national team by becoming the country's joint-youngest goalscorer earlier this month.

"When there is a big club who want Mario, Dortmund has to tell the club that there is no chance," said Struth. "In any case, they will not sell him. In two or three years, who knows? I don't know what will happen then."

Goetze's current contract with the club he first joined as an eight-year-old runs until 2014.

Source: Arsenal is serious contender to acquire Clint Dempsey before deadline

Arsenal has a realistic chance of signing Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey as the team desperately searches for valuable players as the transfer window comes to a close.

A source close to the player told Goal.com that Arsenal will acquire Dempsey within the next 48 hours as long as Fulham does not set the price too high.

"The deal seems like a very real possibility, but will come down to how quickly the two sides can agree on the selling price," the source said.

Fulham does not want to sell the club's key attacker but privately accepts that it will be unable to fend off Arsenal if the north Londoners match the value of $16.3 million for the American, who is highly regarded at Craven Cottage and has two years remaining on his contract.

The Gunners made their initial move for Dempsey before Sunday's 8-2 humiliation at Manchester United after Arsene Wenger identified the American's versatility and experience as qualities that can improve his threadbare squad.

Sources close to Dempsey say he has aspirations to play in the Champions League after joining Fulham from Major League Soccer in January 2007.

Dempsey was the Fulham's leading scorer last season with 13 goals, including 12 in the Premier League. He has already added another two in the Europa League this season and scored in his team's 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United on Sunday.

With the team's lack of depth, while playing in two league, Fulham may have no choice but to keep Dempsey, who has established a fine reputation in England as a durable attacking midfielder and can play anywhere behind the main striker and create.

“The Premier League is one of the toughest competitions in the world,” Dempsey told Goal.com. “Add onto that the Europa League and you’ve got to have squad depth if you’re going to be successful in both.”

Fulham coach Martin Jol is ready to make a late move for FC Twente's Bryan Ruiz if he loses Dempsey. The 26-year-old Costa Rican has been closely tracked by Fulham during the window and has admitted that he is open to a move to England.
