MELBOURNE: Karolina Pliskova has flown under the radar at the Australian Open this year and the former world No 1 moved quietly into the quarterfinals on Kia Arena today after many of the top seeds had scattered to the winds.

Still effectively on the comeback trail after an arm fracture prevented her from playing in Australia last year, the Czech reached the last eight with a 6-0, 6-4 win over China’s Zhang Shuai on the least prestigious court still being used.

Reunited this season with former coach Sascha Bajin, who helped her to the Wimbledon final and No 3 in the world in 2021, Pliskova felt she was getting back in the groove after her best performance of the tournament so far.

“I’ve been feeling quite good since I came to Australia,” she told reporters.

“The timing, sometimes you just feel it. You feel you are hitting clean. That’s what was happening for the last two or three weeks.

“But lately I think all the matches which I’ve played here, I played quite solid, not with big gaps of not having that focus there, or too many mistakes. I think the serve was really working for me well in these matches.”

Only two top 10 seeds, Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka, remain in the quarterfinals, leaving Pliskova as one of the more experienced Grand Slam campaigners.

Also a losing finalist at the US Open in 2016 and a semifinalist at all four Grand Slams, the 30-year-old is not overly surprised at the number of upsets at the tournament.

“I feel like these days there is not just top 20 tough opponents, there is like 150 tough opponents,” the world No 31 added.

“If you’re just not there completely that day, you can lose.

“I think Sabalenka is a big favourite of this half (of the draw). She’s always going to be tough because she has a big game.

“Then the rest, Pegula, I think she’s playing great tennis. I’m happy she’s in the other part of the draw.”

Pliskova will face Magda Linette in her fourth quarterfinal at the Australian Open after the unheralded Pole knocked out fourth seed Caroline Garcia today.

“If I play like I played today, I think it’s tough for anybody to compete with that. But it’s not going to be easy,” she said.

MELBOURNE: Novak Djokovic steamrolled local hope Alex de Minaur 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 today to ease into the quarterfinals of the Australian Open with a statement win in his quest for a 10th title at the Grand Slam that has only been threatened by a hamstring issue.

It was Djokovic’s 38th consecutive win on Australian soil and the fewest number of games he has dropped in a match at the year’s first Major since he lost four against Lucas Pouille in the semifinals in 2019.

Asked after the match why he beat de Minaur the way he did, Djokovic replied: “Because I wanted to.”

Djokovic drew first blood after a breathless start to the match when de Minaur crashed a forehand into the net to allow the fourth seed to go up 4-2 and the Serbian consolidated the break and struck again to claim the first set.

Having never lost at Melbourne Park since the fourth round in 2018 the 35-year-old was in no mood to give de Minaur a sniff of a chance on Rod Laver Arena, as he raced out of the blocks and dominated his opponent with blistering shots on both wings.

“I can’t say I’m sorry you’ve not watched a longer match,” Djokovic told fans.

“I wanted to win in straight sets. Once on the court, you have to deal with a lot of things … the first four, five games were close and after the break I started feeling more loose and more aggressive.

“He was a bit more nervous and that was my opportunity to capitalise. Tennis is a quick, dynamic sport, so things change in a matter of moments, but I was able to play my best match of the year.”

Djokovic also said that he did not face any issues with his hamstring for the first time in the tournament.

“I’ve been taking a lot of pills to mask the pain, not those kinds of pills guys,” he said to laughs.

“Anti-inflammatory … I don’t want to go too deep into it, but today was the best day of the tournament.”

Up two sets to love and with his heavily-strapped hamstring cooperating after scares in the last two rounds, Djokovic moved in for the kill by taking the first four games of the third and finished in style to gear up for fifth seed Andrey Rublev next.

“He’s an established top five player,” Djokovic added.

“He has incredible firepower from his serve and forehand, explosive – a lot like de Minaur – so hopefully the result is the same.”

MELBOURNE: Novak Djokovic surged into the Australian Open quarter-finals in ominous fashion on Monday while Aryna Sabalenka was an equally ruthless winner.

After a series of shocks at Melbourne Park, normal order was more or less restored on day eight, except for fourth seed Caroline Garcia bowing out under the weight of expectation.

Djokovic demolished Alex de Minaur for the loss of just five games to sweep into the last eight and step up his bid for a 10th Melbourne crown, and record-tying 22nd major title in all.

He will meet fifth seed Andrey Rublev for a semi-final berth after the Russian toppled Danish teenage talent Holger Rune in a thrilling five-set clash also at Rod Laver Arena.

The Serb's 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 triumph over 22nd-seeded home hope De Minaur was significant also because his troublesome left hamstring was much improved.

Asked afterwards how he had been so emphatic, Djokovic told the crowd: "Because I wanted to."

The 35-year-old called it his "best match of this year so far" and a "perfect match."

And of his hamstring added: "Tonight I didn't feel any pain. I moved as well as I have the whole tournament.
"It means we are progressing in the right direction."

His next opponent Rublev admitted he was "lucky" after saving two match points against Rune in energy-sapping heat.

He described beating the 19-year-old as "not like a rollercoaster, it's like they put a gun to your head. A rollercoaster is easier."

In a men's draw decimated by shocks, including the second-round exit of reigning champion Rafael Nadal, there will be a last-eight clash between two unseeded Americans.

The 20-year-old Ben Shelton, on his first trip outside the United States, emerged from another five-setter against friend and fellow American JJ Wolf.

Shelton is only the fourth man in the past 20 years to reach the Melbourne quarter-finals on debut.

"Definitely a surprise," said 89th-ranked Shelton, who a year ago was at the University of Florida and ranked 569 in the world.

"It being my first time, never being out of the United States, I knew it would be a struggle," he added.

"So I think it maybe has helped me a little bit kind of not having that expectation or the feeling that I have to perform, but being able to just go out there, be myself and play free."

He plays Tommy Paul, who defeated 24th seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain.

In the women's draw, Garcia became the latest top-10 seed to fall, with a shock defeat to Magda Linette, ranked 45 in the world.

This is the first Grand Slam since the Open era began in 1968 to lose the top two seeds in both the men's and women's draws before the last eight.

Unseeded Pole Linette stunned Garcia 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 and the French player admitted that expectations and nerves got the better of her.

Asked if being one of the favourites for the title had been too much to handle, she replied: "Yes, I think so.
"It's one of the things I'm not comfortable with."

Linette said she "couldn't believe it" as she reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final at the age of 30.

She faces Karolina Pliskova after the former world number one romped past China's Zhang Shuai 6-0, 6-4.

Sabalenka never really looked like she would follow top seed Iga Swiatek, Garcia and the rest out of the first major of the year.

The Belarusian and third-seeded American Jessica Pegula – both chasing a maiden major crown – are now the women to beat.

Sabalenka defeated dangerous 12th seed Belinda Bencic 7-5, 6-2 to set up a last-eight clash against unseeded Donna Vekic, who beat 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova in three sets.

Hard-hitting Sabalenka sprinted into her first quarter-final at the Australian Open and said: "My whole life, it took me a little while to understand that negative emotion is not gonna help you on court.

"You have to just stay strong and believe no matter what, and then do everything you can." --AFP
