Spurs in shock Neville move

Not content with pursuing a loan deal for David Beckham, Harry Redknapp is also making a bid to bring the midfielder's former team-mate Phil Neville to Tottenham.

According to the Daily Mail, reports are at an "advanced stage" between Everton and Tottenham regarding a deal that could see the 33-year-old move to White Hart Lane for a fee in the region of £1.5 million, and on an 18-month contract.

The news comes as a surprise as Neville is highly regarded at Goodison Park and has frequently drawn praise from manager David Moyes for his professionalism and the positive impact he has as captain and a senior member of the squad.

However, Redknapp is believed to be keen to strengthen his options at right-back and few players have handled Tottenham's left-winger Gareth Bale as well as Neville this season.

Redknapp was evasive when questioned about his interest in Neville, though he did not deny Tuesday's reports.

"Phil Neville is a fantastic professional, he is a real leader, a great player, but I'm sure David Moyes knows just how important he is to his team," Redknapp told Sky Sports News. "We played them twice recently and he was a real leader for them, so I'm sure David won't want to lose him, so it will be a difficult one."

If Neville does move to White Hart Lane then he will offer a more defensive option than current right-back Alan Hutton. Croatian Vedran Corluka can also play in the position but has recently been linked with a move away from the club.

Neville could be joined in North London by fellow 1999 Treble-winner Beckham, who is believed to be ready to take a pay cut in order to secure a loan move to Spurs.

Beckham underwent a medical with Tottenham at their training ground on Monday but talks are still ongoing with LA Galaxy regarding the terms of any loan move. Redknapp is hopeful a deal can be struck.

"It is great to have him here," Redknapp said. "Everyone has worked hard to get him here and we were hoping he would come and play obviously.

"No one could have worked harder than the chairman, Daniel Levy, everybody. They grafted away to try and get a deal done so he could play for us, but it was a bit complicated. You never know, though, and we will see how we go."

Redknapp feels Beckham will be able to hit the ground running if a deal can be reached. He said: "He is a fit lad and looks like he is in great condition. That would not be a problem, but whether it is possible to do it I am not sure."

Beckham's blistering injury scare

David Beckham caused a stir after limping out of Tottenham's training session on Wednesday, but the 'injury' was later revealed to be a mere blister.

Beckham, who is training with Spurs in the MLS off-season, will have worried his club LA Galaxy with his 15-minute treatment for the complaint, but was able to resume the session without any further trouble.

Galaxy were fearful of loaning their star player out after he ruptured his ankle ligaments while on loan at AC Milan last year, and the latest scare will not have filled them with confidence.

Thankfully, though, the Spurs medical staff were able to deal with the blister and the incident is believed not to have affected Beckham's chances of sealing a January move.

Redknapp: Bentley can succeed

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp insists that David Bentley can be a success on loan, after conceding that the crowd has forced him out of White Hart Lane.

Bentley is set to seal a six-month loan deal to Birmingham, while Spurs have taken David Beckham on trial. Redknapp admits that the two players are ''similar'' but says he will give the disillusioned 26-year-old an escape route in January.

"I played him against Arsenal and he hadn't played for months. He'd been injured, he came back and played his first game in the Carling Cup and I thought he did well," he said.

"Yet I felt the crowd was on him a bit - they were waiting for him to make a mistake, and it's not easy when you play like that. He was a bit low after the game, I could see that. He was disappointed and I just felt maybe it's time for him to move on."

Bentley could find himself surplus to requirements with the expected arrival of winger Steven Pienaar in the summer, but Redknapp insists that the midfielder has the potential to resurrect his career.

"He could move on and do a fantastic job. That's my honest opinion," he said. "He can cross it, he can score goals, he can pick a pass. He's got no real pace. He is similar to [David] Beckham in lots of ways, he's got that unbelievable delivery of the ball.''
