Spurs edge closer to Becks deal

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp hopes to tie up a two-month loan for David Beckham by Sunday, following a week of talks with his club LA Galaxy.

Former England captain Beckham, 35, has been the subject of interest from numerous sides but is now close to a return to the club where he honed his skills as a youngster at Spurs' School of Excellence.

Tottenham boss Redknapp says there is a "good chance" a deal will happen for Beckham and hopes the former Manchester United midfielder will come to watch the club's FA Cup third-round match against Charlton on Sunday.

"I think he could be here on Sunday possibly if what I'm being told on the grapevine is right," Redknapp said. "The clubs are talking and there is a good chance it will happen.

"Hopefully he will come to the game, I'm sure. I'm not 100% sure but he could be here on Sunday."

If Beckham's arrival is secured this weekend, he could well make his debut against Manchester United in the Premier League on January 16.

Redknapp is confident the deal will go though and is convinced that Beckham will provide an ability to cross the ball that was lacking in the Londoners' 2-1 defeat to Everton in midweek.

"I wouldn't bring him here if I didn't think he had something to offer,'' Redknapp said. "We're not talking about long-term but I'd love to have him around the place.

"He would lift the level of the other players, people would respond to playing with him and having him around and he would be a good influence around the place.

"He could be a massive player for us. He has the ability to do some of the things that we don't do well. The other night we played Peter Crouch up front. Alan Hutton hits him with one great ball, he heads the ball down and Rafa van der Vaart scores.

"Other than that he (Crouch) didn't get too many opportunities because we didn't put the ball where we should be putting the ball. David Beckham has that ability to drop the ball on his head 19 times out of 20 and that's important.''

However, despite Redknapp's optimism, ESPNsoccernet understands there is no deal as yet and that there is still some hard bargaining to do. The player is on standby to be unveiled to the Spurs fans on Sunday.

Talks are scheduled to resume on Saturday between the two clubs.

Meanwhile, Redknapp has played down the prospect of Tottenham signng Andy Carroll from Newcast, despite reports that he made an approach for the striker. "I have never discussed it with Alan Pardew,'' Redknapp said. "Alan doesn't want to sell him as far as I know so that's the end of that one.''

Winger David Bentley, a target for the Magpies, will leave the club, but Liverpool target Vedran Corluka will be staying at White Hart Lane.

"David Bentley will go on loan because he wants to play. He is frustrated at the moment,'' he said. "The chairman is dealing with it. I suppose it depends on whether we get a good deal for the club.

"He (Corluka) is very much part of my plans here. He is certainly not available on loan.''

Ferguson questions Beckham loan

Sir Alex Ferguson has questioned whether David Beckham's short-term loan move will be of significant benefit to Tottenham.

LA Galaxy midfielder Beckham, 35, is due to seal a two-month loan to White Hart Lane on Sunday as he seeks to convince Fabio Capello that he still has a future at international level.

Harry Redknapp believes Beckham's experience and character will be a real boost to the squad as they look to play their part in the title race, but Ferguson is not convinced.

"The thing with David if he comes to England is that he will have to go back in March," Ferguson said. "It's a very short-term loan and we had the same situation with Henrik Larsson in 2007.

"We utilised those two months well and Henrik played a great part, but we knew we would miss him at the very time when we would have liked to have had him - at the tail-end of the season - but that was the arrangement, so we had to move on."

He added: "Obviously anyone at 35 is looking at the twilight years of his career. I have players at United like Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville who grew up with David and are at the same level.

"They know they are coming towards the end of their careers and the horrible part of being a manager is seeing that. These players are eventually going to retire. David knows that better than anyone."

Redknapp, though, feels the signing will give the fans a lift and expects Beckham to prove his worth during his brief stint.

"They [the fans] will be pleased to have him here," Redknapp said. "Everyone respects him. He wants to play football.

"Most players would sit around thinking, "That's okay, I've got eight weeks now to sit around the pool. Go and have a game of golf, or whatever" but he wants to play.

"It tells you everything about him. That's why he's probably had such a great career. He's always worked hard. He always puts a shift in. He's a good trainer. You never hear anybody who ever played with him criticising him."

Redknapp also reiterated that he has no plans to sign Ajax striker Luis Suarez.

"He's a good player but we haven't made any offer for him," he said. "I would doubt very much that anything will happen there. I've watched him loads of times; he's not an out-and-out striker but he could play anywhere."

Tottenham 3 - 0 Charlton

Cruise at the Lane

Tottenham booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup thanks to an impressive second-half performance capped by a brilliant brace from former Charlton man Jermain Defoe.

Spurs put a sluggish first half behind them to take the lead through pacy youngster Andros Townsend, who fired past goalkeeper Rob Elliot to mark his debut with a goal.

Defoe, who started his career with the Addicks, made it 2-0 with a low drive before rounding off the victory by stabbing home from 18 yards for his fifth of the season.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, who had hoped David Beckham would be in the stands to watch today's match, announced that a loan deal for the star had fallen through before kick-off, and that the midfielder would come to the club just to train for a month.

On this evidence Townsend, who recently had his season-long loan terminated at Ipswich, may prove to be as exciting an option as the former England captain. The 19-year-old winger quickly made an impression on the game, beating two players with step-overs on the right before flashing a dangerous low ball across the box in the second minute.

Townsend won a free-kick in the 14th minute which Niko Kranjcar curled just wide.

Charlton, without a manager and 45 places below Spurs in the league ladder, looked threatening at times but the hosts controlled most of the possession in the opening half hour.

Roman Pavlyuchenko tested Elliot with a long-range shot 19 minutes in before Charlton captain Christian Dailly threw himself in front of Defoe to block the striker's shot moments later.

However, Spurs were becoming wasteful in possession and lacked the spark regularly offered by the likes of Rafael van der Vaart and Luka Modric - both of whom were on the bench.

Charlton pushed for an opener as the game reached the half-hour mark when midfielder Scott Wagstaff surged down the right to cross for Joe Anyinsah but Sebastien Bassong scrambled clear from inside the box.

Former Tottenham man Johnnie Jackson then beat Sandro down the left but Wagstaff shot just wide from 10 yards while under pressure from Wilson Palacios.

Then Jose Semedo then crossed for Jackson but his ball went just over the Addicks midfielder's head.

Redknapp looked to Modric for inspiration, the Croatian coming on for the poor Palacios at the break.

The home side came out looking to make an immediate breakthrough and Pavlyuchenko could have scored had it not been for a diving block from another former Spurs man, Gary Doherty.

The opening goal came just under four minutes into the half when Townsend picked up Sandro's pass, got the ball out from under his feet and rifled a deflected shot past Elliot from 20 yards.

Spurs, now playing with the attacking verve often seen at White Hart Lane this season, looked for a second. Elliot produced a fine diving save to deny Pavlyuchenko before Modric's quick feet allowed him to wriggle past three Charlton but his shot went a yard wide.

Defoe poked wide from 20 yards but he soon made amends by putting Spurs 2-0 up just before the hour.

Kranjcar laid the ball to the striker, who dummied a shot before despatching a low 18-yard drive to score against the club where he began his career.

Now bristling with confidence, Defoe charged at the Charlton defence, won the ball back after being challenged, and fired past Elliot to make it 3-0 - after seeing his first effort blocked.

Cudicini was called into action as they slowed down with 15 minutes left when he palmed over a fierce shot from Charlton substitute Kyel Reid.

Townsend looked desperate to score his second and went close in the 79th minute when he shot a yard wide.

Modric's introduction was proving to be a masterstroke as he continued to cause problems for the away side.

The Croatian had a strong shot blocked by a wall of Charlton defenders and he was then brought down by Therry Racon on the edge of the box. Elliot produced a fine save to tip the resulting free-kick from Benoit Assou-Ekotto around the post.

Cudicini tipped over Akpo Sodje's 18-yard strike in the dying minutes as Charlton looked for a consolation before the Italian denied Doherty in injury time with a point-blank save from the former Spurs man.

Spurs still locked in Beckham talks

Tottenham are still trying to resurrect their on-off loan move for David Beckham, with the club locked in last-gasp talks with LA Galaxy to try to resolve the final differences over salary share and insurance.

Beckham arrived at Spurs' Chigwell training ground on Monday morning and underwent a medical - something usually only reserved for players who are set to sign for a club.

The former England captain had been due to be unveiled as a Tottenham player during Sunday's FA Cup win over Charlton, but the announcement was called off as the deal had not been finalised.

That is still the case now, although ESPNsoccernet has been informed that talks are back on to find a solution to enable Beckham to play for Spurs. It is still possible that an announcement will be made later on Monday, with Beckham's advisors working hard to help the two clubs resolve their outstanding issues.

A Tottenham insider told ESPNsoccernet: "Talks are ongoing and it will be much later in the day, at the earliest, before anyone has anything to say."

ESPNsoccernet revealed last week that there were intrinsic problems over Beckham's £500,000 insurance costs, with Spurs hesitant to pay such a large figure to have a player for such a short spell.

Equally, Spurs were aiming to offset part, if not all, of their outlay, with a share of shirts sales - but had to resolve the image rights deal that links Beckham with more than one company.

In addition, Spurs wanted to ensure they had Beckham for the maximum number of games in order to make the whole process worthwhile.
