Gomes urges Tottenham to buy more stars

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has urged manager Harry Redknapp to sign more players like Rafael van der Vaart to help the club win trophies.

Tottenham finished fourth in the Premier League last season to secure their first taste of Champions League football and Redknapp said last week the club are just a couple of players short of being serious title contenders.

Gomes is happy to see the likes of former Arsenal captain William Gallas and £8 million signing Van der Vart heading to White Hart Lane and has urged Redknapp for more of the same in January.

"You need experienced players, those who know how to win the Premier League," said the Brazilian. "I think we need players like that, quality. We have quality players already, but you need players to make an impact on the team, like Van der Vaart has."

Manchester United will provide Tottenham with a real test of their title credentials when the two sides clash at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Modric confident Spurs can end Old Trafford jinx

Luka Modric says Tottenham Hotspur are ready to end their lengthy winless streak at Old Trafford when they visit Manchester United on Saturday.

Tottenham have not won at Old Trafford since 1989 but face a United side who, though unbeaten in the Premier League this season, have shown a tendency to let leads slip.

Modric feels Tottenham are capable of challenging Sir Alex Ferguson's side away from home, having taken great heart from a fine second-half performance in a 4-3 Champions League defeat to Inter Milan last week, despite the Croatian being sacrificed after Gomes' red card.

"We're ready, why not?" Modric told the club's official website. "We showed against Inter in the second half that we can compete with the best teams in the world and United is certainly one of the best teams in the world.

"But why not go there and try to win? I know Tottenham haven't won at Old Trafford for a long time, so why not now?

"It's the best stage to play, the best stadium and it will be a great game for us. I hope we can do something there."
