Asian stocks pare gains, yen extends rally

r

Asian stocks erased earlier gains and the Japanese yen rallied to a fresh eighteen-month high on Tuesday as investors grew doubtful about global central banks' ability to boost growth through aggressive policy easing.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS was flat after being up as much as 0.4 percent on the day and is now trading at a three-week low.

"Markets are telling us is that the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan are failing in their mission to expand monetary stimulus and that these policies are not doing what they are expected to do," said Cliff Tan, east Asia head of global markets research at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd.

"That is discouraging for equities"

The BOJ stunned markets last week by keeping monetary policy unchanged in the face of growing headwinds for its economy while the ECB has recently struck a more guarded stance on the question of adding more stimulus.

Stock markets in Hong Kong and Taiwan led regional losers after a private survey showed activity at China's factories shrinking for the 14th straight month in April as demand stagnated, forcing companies to shed jobs at a faster pace.

Australia's stock markets rose 0.8 percent as market attention focused squarely on the Australian central bank's interest rate decision at 0430 GMT. Economists don't expect any change to policy at this meeting so a surprise rate cut would add to concerns about the lack of growth in the global economy.

While a firm finish in U.S. stocks, thanks to a rebound in financials led by Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N), offered a sliver of hope to Asian investors, the sharp gains in the Japanese yen against the dollar deflated optimism.

The dollar set a fresh 18-month low versus the yen on Tuesday, as the yen pushed higher in a holiday-thinned market with one Singapore-based trader saying there appeared to some speculative yen buying.

Japan is in the middle of its Golden Week series of holidays. Markets were closed on Friday and will be closed on Tuesday to Thursday this week.

The dollar lost 0.3 percent to 106.09 yen JPY=, and fell to as low as 106.05 yen at one point, its lowest level since October 2014.

The yen added to its recent gains, having jumped about 5 percent against the dollar last week as the BOJ held off from expanding its monetary stimulus - the yen's biggest weekly gain since 2008.

The U.S. Treasury put Japan on a new currency monitoring list with four other countries that have large trade surpluses with the United States, seen making it harder for Tokyo to intervene in the markets to stem the yen's gains.

The dollar index .DXY, which measures the dollar's performance against a trade-weighted basket of its peers, is trading at its lowest since January 2015.

Despite its recent losses, the Australian dollar AUD=D3 still remains vulnerable to any sudden policy changes due to heavy positioning. Currency futures show long positions in the Aussie at their highest levels in almost two years.

After raising interest rates in December for the first time in nearly a decade, the Fed held monetary policy steady last week. While it kept the door open to a hike in June, it gave no signal that it was in a hurry to tighten further given the economy's slowdown, even as the labor market has improved.

Crude oil futures edged lower after hitting 2016 highs on Friday as fears of a global supply glut eased. [O/R]

Oil futures CLc1 rose to $45.10 a barrel in Asian trading, slightly below the 2016 high of $46.78 hit on Friday and 80 percent above February's low.

Spot gold XAU= briefly rose above $1,300 an ounce in the previous session, its highest since January 2015, before edging lower on Tuesday.

Rates markets were largely subdued with U.S. ten year yields US10YT=RR steady around 1.88 percent.

Swap-free accounts are suitable for anyone who wants to work without such fees affecting their trading volume. They are especially appropriate for Muslim traders, as they remain consistent with the religious practices of Islam by not charging interest - this is why such accounts are also called ‘Islamic’.

Swaps are interest rates administered by banks on deals that stay open overnight. They could be either positive or negative, depending on the type of deal (buy/sell) as well as the type of asset. You can check the specific amounts of the swap by browsing the list of trading instruments. To compensate for the lack of swaps, Islamic accounts work on a fixed commission, which is perfect for traders who tend to make long-term deals.

Top 5 Things to Know In the Market on Tuesday

LYNXNPEC180BO_L.jpg

Investing.com - Here are the top five things you need to know in financial markets on Tuesday, May 3:

1. Dollar extends losses against yen, euro

The dollar extended losses against a basket of six major currencies, slipping to a low of 91.89 at one point on Tuesday, its weakest level since January 2015. It last stood at 92.12 by 9:58GMT, or 5:58AM ET, down 0.44% for the day.

In early trading, the yen rose to a fresh 18-month high of 105.55 against the dollar, while the euro hit its strongest level since last August at $1.1615.

The dollar index has fallen more than 6% so far this year as expectations faded that the Federal Reserve would move to normalize interest rates due to fears over a global economic slowdown.

2. EU Commission cuts euro zone growth forecasts

Euro zone growth will be slower than previously expected with subdued inflation this year, the European Commission said in its economic forecasts on Tuesday.

The gross domestic product of the 19-country currency area is predicted to expand 1.6% this year, down from a previous estimate of 1.7% made in February. Consumer prices are also expected to increase by less than previously estimated. They are now seen up 0.2% this year, significantly below the 0.5% increase forecast in February by the Commission.

3. RBA cuts rates, Aussie slides

The Reserve Bank of Australia cut its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a record low 1.75%, the first easing in a year, as it seeks to restrain a rising currency and stave off the creeping curse of deflation.

In the wake of the decision, the benchmark ASX 200 Index ended up 2.1%, compared with gains of around 0.5% before the decision. The Australian dollar dropped to as low as $0.7556 after the decision, from levels a tad above $0.7700 before the announcement. It last stood at $0.7575, down 1.2% for the day.

4. Factory activity in China, U.K. contracts in April

Fears over China's economic health intensified after data showed that factory activity shrank for a 14th straight month in April. The China Caixin manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI) fell to 49.4 from March's 49.7, missing forecasts for 49.9.

Meanwhile, in the U.K., the Markit manufacturing PMI fell to 49.2 in April from a downwardly revised reading of 50.7 in March. It was the first time that the index fell below the 50.0 level separating growth from contraction since March 2013, highlighting concerns over a deepening slowdown in the sector at the start of the second quarter.

5. Gold climbs back above $1,300

Gold futures rose to an intraday peak of $1,303.85 a troy ounce as the U.S. dollar crashed to 15-month lows against a basket of other major currencies.

Dollar weakness usually benefits gold, as it boosts the metal's appeal as an alternative asset and makes dollar-priced commodities cheaper for holders of other currencies.
