PETALING JAYA: The MCA has urged to the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) to exercise prudence and uphold the Federal Constitution when carrying out its tasks.
"Once and for all, be sensitive towards the feelings of non-Muslims by ceasing to execute raids, trespassing into non-Muslim places of worship and halting all interference on non-Muslim religious ceremonies," said Datuk Koo Chin Nam, MCA's Syariah Law and Policy Implementation Special Task Force deputy chairman, in a statement Tuesday.
He was referring to an incident on Sunday when Jais officers detained a woman midway through her Hindu wedding ceremony in Shah Alam.
The bride, Zarena Abdul Majid, 32, claimed that she had applied for a petition to renounce Islam as she was under-aged when her father converted her.
She also claimed that she was a practising Hindu despite being registered at the National Registration Department as a Muslim.
It was reported that Zarena was taken to the Shah Alam Jais headquarters where her statement was recorded before she was released.
Koo, in his statement, pointed out that the Federal Constitution provided that Jais' authority cannot be imposed on non-Muslims.
"Under Islam, there is no compulsion in religion.
"Jais should reflect on this value, especially in our multiracial and multi-religious society," he said.
Koo also called for enforcement authorities and the public to exercise "common sense" and to be rational.
"Look at the case objectively for the good of the country, and the right of every citizen to worship based on the Federal Constitution," he said.
