Purbaya confident natural resources reform to help stabilizing rupiah

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa voiced strong optimism that stricter enforcement of natural resource export proceeds (DHE SDA) will inject vital foreign exchange liquidity into the domestic market and help reverse the rupiah’s recent decline.

Speaking in Jakarta, Wednesday (June 3), Purbaya labeled the policy a strategic pillar for reinforcing Indonesia's external economic resilience—ensuring that the financial windfalls from the nation’s booming commodity exports are retained within the domestic banking system.

"When the prevailing market sentiment begins to subside, supported by the influx of foreign exchange from exports into the country, the rupiah has the opportunity to strengthen again," Purbaya said, predicting the initial impact of the policy would materialize in the near future.

Under the new regulation, natural resource exporters are required to place 100 percent of their export proceeds in Indonesia’s financial system, ensuring full compliance with repatriation requirements.

By increasing the supply of US dollars in the domestic market, the government aims to ease foreign exchange shortages and provide stronger support for the rupiah against speculative pressures.

Purbaya said that deeper domestic liquidity, combined with stricter oversight of export earnings, would make Indonesia’s financial system more resilient to global economic volatility.

He expressed confidence that the policy would help improve sentiment among foreign investors and financial markets.

Purbaya also stated that the Finance Ministry’s primary focus under President Prabowo Subianto is to maintain macroeconomic stability and sustain growth momentum.

“My responsibility is to maintain strong economic fundamentals so that the economy can continue growing at a faster pace,” he said.

The finance minister concluded by pledging continued coordination with relevant authorities to safeguard the national financial system from external economic shocks.
