Stronger legal frameworks need to harness RI's natural resources

Deputy Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Otto Hasibuan emphasised the need to strengthen governance and legal aspects in harnessing the potential of Indonesia's natural resource.

Hasibuan said the natural resources in Indonesia must be utilised optimally to improve public welfare and support sustainable development.

"Indonesia possesses extraordinary wealth," Hasibuan said when confirmed here on Friday.

One region endowed with extraordinary natural wealth is Aceh. Previously, during an audience with Wali Nanggroe Aceh in Banda Aceh on Sunday (May 31), Hasibuan stressed the region had enormous natural resource potential and could serve as one of the driving forces of the national development.

However, he also highlighted the importance of addressing various development challenges in Aceh, including the flooding that continues to affect a number of areas.

According to him, continuous mitigation efforts, evaluation, and coordination between the central and local governments are required to ensure that disaster management could be carried out more effectively.

On the occasion, Hasibuan appreciated for the warm reception and opportunity to engage in direct dialogue with one of the key figures in Aceh's history.

"I am very pleased to visit Aceh and hear firsthand various historical accounts from a figure who played a role in Aceh's history. This is a highly valuable experience in understanding the journey of a region that has made significant contributions to the Indonesian nation," he remarked.

Teungku Malik Mahmud Al-Haythar, the Wali Nanggroe of Aceh, also underscored the vast natural resource potential of Aceh, which should be managed optimally and sustainably to improve the welfare of the people.

Mahmud Al-Haythar welcomed Hasibuan's visit and elaborated on Aceh's long history, the origins of the Wali Nanggroe institution, and Aceh's role in the history of Indonesia.
