Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto stated that the school renovation program has been expanded to cover schools across Indonesia, including those in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), with the renovations targeted for completion by 2029.

“In 2029, we must complete the renovation of all schools in Indonesia, including elementary, junior high, senior high, and vocational high schools, as well as schools in pesantren,” Prabowo said during his state address at the 2026 Annual Session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD RI) at the MPR/DPR building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday.

Prabowo said providing nutritious meals alone was insufficient to improve the quality of human resources. According to him, Indonesian children must also receive quality education supported by adequate school facilities.

“We know that providing nutritious food alone is not enough. Our children must receive a good education,” he said.

Therefore, the government implemented a large-scale school renovation program. Prabowo stated that as of 2026, a total of 71,744 schools had been renovated, up from approximately 17,000 schools the previous year.

The government targets renovating 100,000 schools in 2027 and another 100,000 in 2028. The President emphasized that the program also covers the country's outermost and remote regions.

The Head of State cited a school on Miangas Island that had already been renovated. In addition, the government plans to improve community health centers in the area.

Prabowo said the government had also formed a special task force to address the needs of the outermost and remote islands, from Sabang to Merauke.

“There is now a special task force for the outermost and remote islands, from Sabang to Merauke and across the entire country,” he added.

On Friday, the MPR RI, DPR RI, and DPD RI held the MPR RI Annual Session and the Joint Session of the DPR RI and DPD RI.

The annual sessions are state events marking the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia's independence and were held under the theme “A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia.”
