Ocean Institute to back Indonesia's global maritime vision: Minister​

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government intends the Ocean Institute of Indonesia (OII) to spearhead efforts in nurturing talent and innovation, supporting the country's vision as a global maritime fulcrum, Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto said.

He commended the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries for establishing the OII, launched on July 21, describing the move as a crucial step to boost vocational education in marine and fisheries while expanding collaboration among universities and stakeholders across relevant sectors.

“The Ocean Institute of Indonesia is expected to become a pillar for human resource development and a hub for research and innovation in marine affairs,” Yuliarto noted in a statement cited here on Thursday.

He expressed confidence that the newly inaugurated institute is capable of driving the development of centers for research and innovation in various regions nationwide by involving universities, lecturers, researchers, and students.

The minister went on to note Indonesia's ocean wealth as a "treasure that must be unlocked by those with knowledge."

"The Ocean Institute of Indonesia will become a backbone for major innovations and breakthroughs in marine affairs," he added.

Yuliarto then voiced hope that the OII would help stimulate the emergence of centers of excellence designed to focus on key sectors relevant to Indonesia's global maritime ambition.

He also envisioned the institute inspiring the establishment of new startup companies capable of turning the sector into "one of Indonesia's major industries."

Meanwhile, Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono underscored the establishment of OII as part of his ministry’s ongoing vocational education overhaul.

“I want us to work with leading universities,” he said.

Trenggono added that several institutions had signed agreements to collaborate with the OII, including the Bandung Institute of Technology, the Bogor Institute of Agriculture, and Diponegoro University.

The minister on Tuesday launched the OII in Jakarta, describing the institute as the result of a merger of 11 polytechnics.

“Our objective is to pursue and implement the blue economy,” he said at the time.
