MPR speaker sees climate action driving growth, investment

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s climate efforts can protect the environment while creating opportunities for economic growth, investment and jobs, Deputy People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Eddy Soeparno said, as the government strengthens its carbon market framework.

Speaking at a news conference in Jakarta on Thursday, Eddy said climate change was not only an environmental issue but also a threat to Indonesia’s economy and national security.

“This requires solutions beyond business as usual, while energy transition and reforestation are now non-negotiable paths,” he said.

Indonesia has established an institutional foundation to turn climate challenges into economic opportunities, supported by Presidential Regulation No. 110/2025 and the Carbon Unit Registry System, Eddy said.

“This also creates economic multipliers through jobs, investment and manufacturing readiness,” he said.

Indonesia remains committed to addressing climate change, with the Abadi Masela project demonstrating how economic growth, energy security and climate mitigation can be pursued together, Eddy said.

The government launched the Carbon Unit Registry System, known as SRUK, on July 9, 2026, as a foundation for developing Indonesia’s national carbon market.

The system, managed by the Environment Ministry, records, administers and verifies carbon units traded under Indonesia’s carbon market framework.

SRUK is governed by Environment Ministry/Environmental Control Agency Regulation No. 10/2026, issued to operationalize the carbon-unit registry under the country’s updated carbon framework.

The government says SRUK is designed to support transparent, credible and high-integrity carbon trading while preventing double counting of emissions reductions.
