Ministry provides Rp4.18b to restore 71 disaster-hit training centers

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Primary and Secondary Education Ministry disbursed Rp4.18 billion in relief funding to support the recovery of 71 courses and training centers (LKPs) affected by floods and landslides that swept Aceh and North Sumatra.

Director General of Secondary and Special Education Tatang Muttaqin noted in a statement on Friday that the ministry launched the initiative in response to reports of disrupted capacity-building activities due to last November’s disasters.

“The natural disasters across Aceh and North Sumatra damaged structures, submerged training devices, and challenged learning continuation at LKPs,” he remarked.

Muttaqin added that the ministry therefore mobilized the funding, equivalent to around US$236,000, as “quality improvement assistance” to the 71 LKPs enduring disruptions after the disasters. He noted the initiative is intended to support non-formal and vocational education in the two provinces.

He further pointed out that 49 of the 71 centers are located in Aceh, with 21 operating in Bireuen District, 12 in Aceh Tamiang District, 10 in Langsa City, and six in Lhokseumawe City.

Meanwhile, North Sumatra received LKP recovery funding for 17 facilities in Langkat District and another five in Deli Serdang District.

"The funding represents tangible capital to restore learning facilities while strengthening governance and reintroducing adaptive learning media aligned with policies encouraging equitable quality in education and vocation-based character education," he elaborated.

Samsinar, chairperson of the Sakinah LKP, expressed confidence that the assistance would help her facility resume services for children unable to pursue formal education.

She noted that the LKP intends to make use of the funding to replace the tools and equipment damaged by the disasters, including sewing machines and makeup supplies.

The Rita LKP in Langkat, North Sumatra, was also included in the funding scheme, receiving aid worth Rp50 million (US$2,800).

Chair of the center, Dewi Rita, viewed the assistance as a morale boost for the LKP to continue empowering people through courses and training.
