Boss: We must nurture Raheem

Brendan Rodgers insists both Liverpool and England must be careful not to over burden teenage winger Raheem Sterling.

The 17-year-old has found himself in the spotlight since making his full debut against Hearts in August, with impressive performances against the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City earning him plaudits.

Even so, Sterling was not selected for England U21 duty this week, and will instead compete with the U19s alongside Adam Morgan.

Rodgers has spoken to the Football Association's director of football development, Sir Trevor Brooking, about the youngster and feels the decision not to elevate him at this stage has merit.

"I think with young players you have to be careful," Rodgers told The Echo.

"They can be elevated above their station too quickly. That is a part of it in this country. They have one good game and they get elevated into superstar status.

"You then see them at 23 and 24 and you wonder why they are not superstars any more. I spoke to Trevor Booking on the thoughts of where the FA believe he is at. I said, in my opinion, of course he has got the ability to be in the U21s.

"But I believe in many ways it is right for him to go with the U19s.

"It is all about individual needs. It might look great on the back pages that he is involved in the U21s but the reality is that this is a kid who has made great strides over the last few weeks.

"He was absolutely fantastic through pre-season. You have seen his quality, courage and attitude in the recent games - it has been fantastic. But for the moment let's just stay calm."

Sterling and Morgan will be up against their new clubmate Samed Yesil when England take on Germany at 5.15pm BST on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Liverpool trio Martin Kelly, Jordan Henderson and Jonjo Shelvey will be in action for England U21s at 4pm in Azerbaijan.

Molby: Allen has Barca mentality

Molby knows all about aggressive, possession football - the Great Dane was one of the pivotal cogs in some of the finest passing sides Liverpool has ever produced.

And he explained why Allen's positional work, after releasing the ball, is the particular aspect of his game that marks the Welshman out as a truly gifted modern-day playmaker.

"In the modern game you've got to have great technique to be able to move the ball away from the opposition at all times," Molby told Liverpoolfc.com. "If we take the Arsenal game, we saw two midfield players who dominated the ball all the time. One of those was Allen, the other was Santi Cazorla.

"They are modern-type midfield players. But what Allen does above anything else, and it's Barcelona-like, is he moves the ball so quickly.

"At no stage does he indulge himself and think, 'I'll do a little bit for myself'. With Joe it's always about doing his bit for the team."

Molby elaborated on this point by explaining how a player's part in a forward move does not simply end once he has distributed the ball to a teammate.

Rather, the player in question should then use his positional sense to manoeuvre himself into a position where he is an outlet to the man on the ball.

And Allen plays this role to perfection, according to Molby.

"With Joe it's about moving the ball to the next player as quickly as he can and then always making himself available," he said. "A bit like Alonso when he was here: if you play somebody a pass, you never leave them in trouble.

"You always make sure that you are there to help them out and Allen does that. And it's a very rare breed of players who can do this.

"Some people might think it's the easiest thing in the world to do, but it's not. You have to be a very intelligent footballer to be able to know where to be at all times."

Allen's style and commitment has endeared him to Kopites throughout the early stages of his Anfield career. Industrious performances against Manchester City and Hearts were followed up with an impressive display as the Reds went down 2-0 to Arsenal.

"He's been our best player," said Molby. "But it's important to remember he's still a young player and it's been a massive step up for him. I know he played in the Premier League last year but the first year is the season everyone says is the easiest one; when players are full of enthusiasm and adrenaline.

"But for him to change clubs and come into a club like Liverpool and basically take the midfield by the scruff of the neck is very impressive."

haritu masa nak beli Allen...majoriti tak setuju atau tak berapa minat sgt kat Allen ni...maybe sbb penah kena scam...so skrg ni ramai yg suka Allen...dan percaya Allen leh menten position tu

So kat sini kena tuko cara judge pemain...tak semua pembelian itu merugikan. bagi aku pembelian si BR ni semua berbaloi...muda....point aku leh bagi kualiti diorang above 6 out of 10 la berbanding hendo dulu...assaidi...dah tau camne style dia...borini pun sama...it is all back to luck...kalau ada luck, diorang akan jadi mcm mana skrtel and agger sekarang...cer ingat...dulu masa beli skrtel n agger...bukan main sgt pun depa ni..skrtel main bek kanan...agger kekadang je main...berapa lama tu bai depa ni nak dapat jadi first team player? so kalau mcm player2 yg kat kelab lama dia perform...dia takes time utk perform kat enpil. kalau dah tau mmg nothing mcm hendo tu...lainlah kan. masalah striker ni nampaknya morgan kena main...letak dia kat depan...support by suarez n borini..cuma rugi kat sini..katik2 striker lfc ni...dulu ada fowler...tapi fowler ada dua keistimewaan...kapla n long shooting dia mantop...masa owen plak...dia katik tapi laju n finishing ade...tapi supported by bagak heskey...skrg ni plak suarez katik n laju...distribution dia tak perfect sgt...bab dribbling technique je lebey...so walaupun ada striker mantop dok depan gol sekalipun kalau suarez asyik wat lawak...passing tak sampai..tak guna gak...kat sini...mentaliti suarez n gerrard kena berubah...diorang yg banyak bagi impak kat team..so kalau dua2 hampeh....mmg hampeh...
