Steve Staunton believes Brendan Rodgers may have no choice but to take Michael Owen back to Liverpool.
The Reds are desperately short of firepower after loaning Andy Carroll to West Ham and failing to sign a replacement before the transfer window closed.
Rodgers is now being forced to look at free agents as he attempts to boost his forward line and Staunton believes injury-prone Owen could be his only hope.
“I don’t think he has got a lot of choice [but to go for Owen],” said Staunton. “My only concern with Michael is the amount of games he has played over the last few years, if you want him to come in and be your main striker.
"But there is no doubting his quality and his finishing ability. He will always score goals."
The 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday has left many Liverpool fans fearing they could be in for a season of struggle.
But Staunton has called for calm, insisting Rodgers will turn things around given time.
"I don’t see them in trouble at all," said the Irishman. "They will get stronger and better, once they get used to Brendan's ways and the team start playing with a bit more fluidity. They will be fine."
