(AP) PATTANI, Thailand — The government says bombs concealed in a car and two motorcycles have killed at least three people and wounded at least 30 in a town in Thailand's insurgency-plagued south.

The government's Internal Security Operations Command information center said the bombs were set off Friday evening in the border town of Sungai Kolok.

The attack was one of the biggest since Thailand's new government was installed in August.

More than 4,700 people have been killed in the Muslim-dominated southernmost provinces of Thailand since an Islamist insurgency erupted in 2004. A massive military effort has failed to stop the violence attributed to the secretive insurgents. No one has claimed responsibility for Friday's attack.

Three car and motorcycle bombs went off in 40 minutes in a Narathiwat district town on Friday, killing at least two people and wounding 50.

Police said one of the dead was a Malaysian tourist, and several other Malaysians were wounded.

The attacks began at 6:40pm in Sungai Kolok district.

The first was a bomb on a motorcycle parked opposite the Teochew Association in Soi 3 of Charoen Khet Road. The explosion injured passersby, both residents and tourists.

Just 15 minutes later, a second motorcycle bomb exploded 300 metres away, in front of a beer bar at a road intersection near the TOT office.

Again, the shrapnel from the bomb wounded local people and several Malaysian tourists.

At 7:20, the third bomb exploded in a car parked near a food stall opposite the popular tourist-packed Merlin Hotel.

The impact of the estimated 30 kilogramme explosive damaged several shops nearby and knocked the glass side of the hotel into shards.

Authorities blocked the roads around the three bomb sites and the mobile phone networks in the district were cut while they were inspecting the scenes.
