S Korea Won Tad Lower Late; Investors Eye ECB Rate Decision:-?
SEOUL (Dow Jones)--The South Korean won was a tad lower against the U.S. dollar late Thursday because of dollar buying by importers and local securities firms, while investors remained cautious as they waited for the European Central Bank's rate-setting decision due later in the global day.
The local currency traded higher against the dollar for most of the session after risk appetite received a boost from better-than-expected U.S. private-sector jobs data Wednesday, but the dollar buying gave the greenback greater support and sparked short covering late in the session, traders said. The dollar traded between KRW1,181.30 and KRW1,192.60 Thursday.
"Investors seem to be taking any fall of the dollar near KRW1,180 as a bargain opportunity," said Hong Seok-chan, a currency analyst at Daishin Economic Research Institute. "As long as the euro-zone sovereign debt problem goes unresolved, the dollar will likely find support at levels around the KRW1,170-KRW1,180 range."

S Korea Won Up Late On ECB Measures; Focus On U.S. Jobs Data:-?
SEOUL (Dow Jones)--The South Korean won rose 1.1% against the U.S. dollar late Friday as risk sentiment improved after the European Central Bank announced measures to prevent a liquidity crisis among euro-zone banks.
On Thursday, the ECB said it would leave its key interest rate unchanged and pledged to help troubled banks by buying covered bonds from next month.
It also said it would finance banks with loans with maturities of up to 13 months later this year.
This boosted risk appetite and the local stock index gained 2.9% following the news, adding to strength in the won.
The dollar briefly fell to a one-week low of KRW1,175.20 during Friday's session but was supported by importers' bargain buying, traders said. Investors were also cautious before the release of key U.S. non-farm payrolls data, due later in the global day, and held back from aggressive dollar selling, they said.
While investors shift their focus to the payrolls data, other jobs data released earlier this week--including weekly jobless claims Thursday and a private-sector jobs report Wednesday--have raised hopes that the key payrolls numbers will be strong, said Byeon Ji-young, a currency analyst Woori Futures.
But she also noted that "the market is expected to remain sensitive to any negative news about the euro-zone debt issue for some time." :-?

Asian currencies strengthened, led by South Korea’s won, as speculation the International Monetary Fund will help Italy reduced concern Europe’s debt crisis will slow global growth and boosted demand for emerging-market assets.

“With speculation of support by the IMF, risk sentiment is temporarily improving,” said Tohru Nishihama, an economist at Dai-ichi Life Research Institute Inc. in Tokyo. “Asia’s economy remains solid and better than other regions, and so when the risk appetite is improving, Asia’s assets and currencies get support.”

The won snapped a six-day decline as the 16 percent increase in sales over Thanksgiving improved the outlook for Korean exports. Overseas shipments, which account for about a half of Korea’s economy, rose 11.6 percent in November from a year earlier after increasing a revised 8 percent the previous month, according to the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg.
“The euro gained on the IMF’s Italy loan plan report, and this is supporting Asian currencies,” said Yun Se Min, a Seoul- based currency trader at Busan Bank. “Investors are reacting to the U.S sales data as well since increasing consumption is good news for Korea’s export-oriented economy.”:-?
