(Reuters) – South Korea and China have been informally discussing ways to increase the use of their local currencies in goods transactions between the two big trading partners, a senior South Korean official said on Monday.

“There has been a lot of informal discussions with China,” on boosting the use of the won and yuan in trading, Vice Finance Minister Shin Je-yoon said during a parliamentary session, when asked if the government was willing to expand use of local currencies.

South Korean Won Jumps Most in Four Months on Intervention Signs:-?

Sept. 23 (Bloomberg) -- South Korea’s won gained the most in almost four months, reversing losses in the final two minutes of trading, after authorities said they were prepared to intervene to curb declines.:-? The nation’s currency, bonds and stocks all declined in the week.

The finance ministry said it will “take action” to stabilize the currency market, after holding an emergency meeting with the central bank before markets opened. “The herd behavior on one-way bets has been excessive in the recent currency market,” the ministry said. Authorities seemed to have intervened “much more strongly” than in previous days, said Kim Seong Soo, a Seoul-based trader with Kyongnam Bank.

“It looks as if the government waited until there was a lot of dollar demand in the market, and then pushed the won up by selling dollars,” said Kim.

The currency rose 1.1 percent to 1,167.31 per dollar at the 3 p.m. close in Seoul, reversing a loss of as much as 1.4 percent, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The won tumbled 4.7 percent this week, the biggest decline since May 2010, as the benchmark stock index fell to the lowest level since July 2010.

Global funds sold $1.4 billion more South Korean, Indonesian and Taiwanese equities than they bought this week through yesterday, according to exchange data. South Korea’s Kospi Index fell 5.7 percent to 1,697.44 today, bringing its losses this week to 7.8 percent.

“If market sentiment continues to be bad, which is likely in the near term, then the government will need to keep intervening to prevent the won from weakening,” said Frances Cheung, a senior strategist at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong. “From government action today, the 1,200 mark is closely watched.”

Monitoring Markets:-?

The International Monetary Fund lowered its forecast for 2011 global economic growth this week to 4 percent from 4.3 percent, and for 2012 to 4 percent from 4.5 percent, predicting a “severe” fallout if Europe fails to contain its debt crisis.

South Korea will expand monitoring of overseas investment trends in the country and capital outflows amid rising financial market volatility caused by the European fiscal crisis, the Financial Supervisory Service said today. Bank Indonesia and the Reserve Bank of India also said they were ready to intervene to slow currency declines.:-?

Central banks intervene in currency markets by arranging purchases or sales of foreign exchange. South Korea has $312 billion in reserves with which to defend the won.

The yield on the 3.5 percent notes due June 2014 rose three basis points, or 0.03 percentage point, this week to 3.44 percent, Korea Exchange Inc. prices show. The rate fell six basis points today.

Overseas investors boosted their holdings of won bonds by 164.8 billion won ($139 million) this month through Sept. 21, according to the Financial Supervisory Service. European investors cut their holdings by 888.3 billion won during the period.

Hundreds of S Koreans besiege stricken savings banks

SEONGNAM, South Korea (Sept 22, 2011): Hundreds of worried customers queued overnight to withdraw their money from seven South Korean savings banks which had been suspended from operations due to concerns about their financial strength.:-?

South of the capital Seoul, a crowd more than 800 people, mostly in their 60s and 70s, gathered outside one of the banks suspended by South Korean authorities on Sunday. Thursday was the first day depositors could withdraw their funds.

"I arrived here late last night, though I could barely stand due to osteoporosis," 72-year old grandmother Park Geum-Rae told Reuters as she queued for he money at Tomato Savings Bank.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported the Supreme Prosecutors' Office as saying it would investigate the seven saving banks over poor management and alleged corruption.

Customers were given the opportunity to use Internet banking services to get their money back, but for many of the older customers who queued at Tomato overnight, hard cash in hand was what they wanted.

"I know there is the Internet application service for refunds, though I'm too old to use it. I'm not interested in studying the Internet, all I want is my money back," said Lee Sun-min, a-68-year old man. – Reuters

Korean Won Has Worst Month Since February 2009 on Growth Concern

Sept. 30 (Bloomberg) -- South Korea’s won completed its biggest monthly loss since February 2009 as signs the global recovery is losing steam and Europe’s debt crisis prompted investors to favor the dollar’s relative safety. Bonds fell.

The currency weakened today as a government report showed industrial production fell more than economists forecast in August.

Overseas investors sold $1.5 billion more Korean stocks than they bought this month through yesterday, based on exchange figures.

Data tomorrow is expected to show exports rose in September at the slowest pace in three months, according to a Bloomberg survey of economists.

S Korea Won Down After New Zealand Credit-Rating Downgrade; Bonds Lower

SEOUL (Dow Jones)--The South Korean won was down against the U.S. dollar late Friday in Seoul as risk-averse investors continued their dollar buying following New Zealand's credit-rating downgrade, and optimism about Germany's approval to expand the European Financial Stability Facility fund dissipated.:-?

Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings both downgraded New Zealand government debt by one notch Friday, citing the country's weakened external-debt position and substantial earthquake-recovery costs as reasons.

Despite active dollar-selling by exporters for their month-end trade settlements, the U.S. unit rose to KRW1,181.80 during the session on dollar buying and demand from importers, traders said.

The won ended September down 9.5% against the greenback from a month earlier amid fears over euro-zone sovereign-debt contagion risks, though South Korea's currency authorities allegedly sold the dollar aggressively during the month to stanch the won's sharp losses. Traders in Seoul estimated the Bank of Korea may have sold a total of around $9 billion to $12 billion this month.

The central bank has declined to comment on the suspected interventions.:-?

SEOUL, Okt 3 (Yonhap) - Korea Selatan akan mengeluarkan bon penstabilan pertukaran asing pada tahun depan, Kementerian Kewangan hari ini berkata, langkah yang dilaksanakan di tengah-tengah kebimbangan kegawatan pasaran kewangan yang berkemungkinan akan kekal pada masa ini.

Kerajaan Korea merancang untuk menetapkan had untuk asing denominasi-mata-wang-asing penstabilan bon dengan pertukaran pada AS $ 1 bilion dan bahawa bagi bon kerajaan bagi mata wang asing pasaran kestabilan pada 18 trilion won (AS $ 15 bilion) tahun depan, meningkat 2 trilion won dari tahun 2011, mengikut rancangan Kementerian Kewangan 2012 bagi pengurusan bon.

Pelan itu memandu had jumlah terbitan bon untuk rekod 19 trilion won tahun depan, apabila mengira won Korea pada 1.070 won berbanding dolar Amerika Syarikat (AS).

Peningkatan ini disebabkan terutamanya oleh peningkatan dalam had bagi bon kerajaan untuk kestabilan pasaran mata wang asing. Selepas memuncak pada 17.3 trillion won pada tahun 2004, angka itu masih tinggi dan mencapai 16 trilion won untuk 2010-2011.

"Keperluan untuk mendapatkan sumber kewangan bagi kestabilan pasaran telah meningkat di tengah-tengah turun naik pasaran mata wang asing. Langkah itu datang kepada kemungkinan peningkatan dalam modal aliran tahun depan di tengah-tengah keresahan di pasaran kewangan global," kata seorang pegawai kementerian berkata.

Sementara itu, kerajaan telah menurunkan had bagi penstabilan bon pertukaran asing denominasi-mata-wang-asing. Selepas mencecah $ 6 bilion pada tahun 2009, had telah bergerak rendah $ 1 bilion pada tahun 2011.

Korea Selatan tidak menerbitkan bon penstabilan denominasi-mata-wang-asing pertukaran asing sejak mengeluarkan bernilai $ 3 bilion bon itu pada tahun 2009.

Kerajaan mungkin untuk mengelak daripada mengeluarkan bon meeka tahun ini, berikutan pegangan rekod-tinggi pertukaran asing Korea Selatan, mengikut kepada pegawai kementerian.

S Korea Won Up Late On Exporters, Offshore Buying; Bonds Rise

SEOUL (Dow Jones)--The South Korean won rose against the U.S. dollar late Wednesday, driven by demand for the local currency from exporters and offshore players after being battered in the previous three sessions amid the euro-zone sovereign debt crisis.:-?

Trading was choppy for most of the session as investors' risk appetite remained weak, as evidenced by the local stock index's 2.3% decline. Demand for the dollar was mixed, with some investors buying around the KRW1,190 level and others selling around that level. However, the local currency received a boost in late trade on demand from exporters and offshore players, as well as dollar sales related to foreigners' local treasury purchases.

The dollar moved between KRW1,187.50 and KRW1,195.00 during the session.
