Bakkah (Arabic: بكة) is an ancient name for Mecca, the most holy city of Islam. Most people believe they are synonyms, but to Muslim scholars there is a distinction: Bakkah refers to the Kaaba and the sacred site immediately surrounding it, while Mecca is the name of the city in which they are both located. Bakkah is mentioned in sura 3 (Al-i-Imran), ayah 96 of the Qur'an, where it is said to be the site of the first place of worship. Others also identify it with the Biblical "valley of Baca" from Psalms 84 (Hebrew: בך).
Al-Azraqi mentions in his book History of Mecca that it was named first Baka because people crowd each other around the Kaaba from the root verb BKK. Makka also have the same etymology as crowding each other but with more into Browl (crowding and browl). It is said it changed name from Bakka to Makka after the Israelites tied Moses and Aaron and wanted to stone them for lack of water. All Islamic sources from Hadith onwards agree on the etymology of Bakka as crowding, but differ in how far Baka extend from Kaaba 10 feet or all the mosque which can host half a million or all the pilgrims of 2 millions in and around the mosque in the pilgrimage days (The Hajj).
Bakkah (also transliterated Baca, Baka, 'Bakke', Bakah, Bakka, Becca, Bekka, etc.) is the ancient name for the site of Mecca. An Arabic language word, its etymology, like that of Mecca, is obscure. Al-Azraqi (750 AD) of a family of long time residence in Mecca ascribe Baka name from BKK verb which means people hit each other unintentionally because of the crowding of people around Kaaba . Mecca too have the same meaning but more of Crowding with a browl. The Jewish Samaritan Book of Moses say Nabateans built Bakah in Chapter viii and Samaritan tarqum replaced it with Mecca as the tradition of Samaritans of replacing ancient names with contemporary names. Chapter in VIII. page 242 " (i) And it came to pass after the death of our master Abraham that Ishmael reigned as king for twenty seven years. And all the children of Ishmael, who are of the seed of his first born, Nebut, ruled one year in Ishmaels lifetime and for thirty years after his death; And they built Bakh.". (Quran 3:96) says that "in baka was the first house built for people to worship the one-god.
The form Bakkah is used for the name Mecca in the Quran in 3:96, while the form Mecca is used in 48:24. In South Arabic, the language in use in the southern portion of the Arabian Peninsula at the time of Muhammad, the b and m were interchangeable. The Quranic passage using the form Bakkah says: "The first sanctuary appointed for mankind was that at Bakkah, a blessed place, a guidance for the peoples." Other references to Mecca in the Quran (6:92, 42:5) call it Umm al-Qura, meaning "mother of all settlements."
