6 Signs That 'Monday Morning Blues' May Be An Emotional Alarm

work_zps4a091075.jpg

By Marie Hartwell-Walker, Ed.D.

Read various website about how to combat the “Monday Blues” and you’ll find pretty much the same advice in all of them: Get extra sleep Sunday night. Give yourself a jolt of cold water in your Monday morning shower. Have some coffee. Make sure to put something on your Monday “to do” list that gives you something to look forward to.

All are good ideas if the problem merely is that you need a jumpstart to the work week. But such suggestions are beside the point if there is a real and important underlying issue that needs to be addressed. Sometimes the resistance to Monday is an inner emotional alarm going off. If that’s the case, taking a cold shower or drinking a cup of coffee won’t solve your Monday Blues any more than taking the battery out of a smoke detector will stop a fire.

Hate Mondays? Maybe you aren’t paying attention to one of these signals:

1. Your job isn’t really “workable.”

Let’s face it: For many, work has become much more demanding in the last 10 years. As companies cut personnel to cut costs, those left are expected to do more and more. Those who have been in their jobs for a long time often have high personal standards for quality that are almost impossible to meet with the increased workload. It’s exhausting and discouraging to feel like “the hurrieder you go, the behinder you get.” It may be appropriate to talk with your supervisor about adjusting your own or the company’s standards. If that’s impossible, it may be time to consider whether you can find a different job.

2. Your job isn’t satisfying.

Only a lucky few have jobs that are thrilling, satisfying, enjoyable, and enriching every minute of every day. Most of us have a whole lot of routine mixed in with occasional periods of excitement, or at least satisfaction. If those moments are few and far between, get busy. You may be able to up the portion of the time that you are happy in your work. Is there a project you could take on that would renew your interest? Is there a way to change your job within the company, either by going for a promotion or through a lateral move that would give you new opportunities? Does the human resources department offer workshops you could take to develop new skills?

3. Your life is out of balance.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” (or Jane a cranky girl.) It’s an old saying that is never irrelevant. If your life is work, work, work, of course you feel out of sorts. No matter how important our work is, we need to remember to refuel through self-care. That includes developing a hobby or interest, taking time for some fun and vacations (or stay-cations), and doing the usual daily regimen of eating right, sleeping enough, and getting some exercise. If you only take care of yourself on weekends, Monday morning is the beginning of five days of deprivation. Not good. Take the time to reassess how you are managing the balance of your life during the week.

4. Your job is hostile to your relationships.

Jobs that require long hours, or that require you to take work home or put in time on the weekends, are killers to family life and friendship maintenance. It’s sad to see parents at kids’ events who couldn’t leave their laptops at home. Friends get impatient with friends who interrupt a social evening to take a business phone call. Yes, these folks are in attendance, but they aren’t really there. Your discontent with your job may be a signal that you are missing out on too much of the warmth and intimacy you need from your relationships. Take a careful look at how you can manage the demands of your job in such a way that it doesn’t cost you love.

5. Your attitude toward work needs adjustment.

We do get what we expect. For some people, work is a four-letter word. Work is, well, “work.” It’s seen as the opposite of fun, the nasty dinner you have to eat before you get to have dessert. When a person has developed an attitude that any work or chore or required activity is a major distraction from enjoyment, Monday morning is, by definition, a downer. If that’s the case, it’s time for an attitude transplant. Unless you are one of the fortunate few to win the lottery or to inherit a trust fund, you’ll be working a great many hours of your life. Better to find a way to embrace it, and, yes, even enjoy it.

6. You are struggling with depression.

Depression can sneak up on a person. It may not be the job that is pulling you down. It may be that you are becoming clinically depressed. Is your appetite off? Are you having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep? Has your interest in sex plummeted? Does doing things that used to be pleasurable for you seem like just too much effort? These could be the signs of depression. Consider going to see a mental health counselor for an evaluation. If you are depressed, the counselor will discuss possible treatment options. This may include some medication and some talk therapy to help you get back to your old self.

Before you buy into the notion that Mondays are awful and simply can’t be changed, take another look. It’s important not to ignore the possibility that the awfulness resides in your choices, not in a day of the week. If that’s the case, you do have the option to make it better. Confront the issue, make some changes (and maybe give yourself that splash of cold water and a cup of coffee), and you can make Monday the start of a productive and satisfying week.

Top 10 ways to prepare yourself for a great day at work

1. Laughter

Make it a point to share (appropriate) jokes with your colleagues or watch a funny video clip every once in a while, as laughter helps us to ease tension. By having a cheerful environment in the workplace, it enables you to have a great day at work.

2. Clothing

Classy and formal clothes will help to boost the confidence in you. When you look nice and neat, you tend to feel good about yourself and become confident in whatever you are doing, including talking to other people.

3. Think positive

Tell yourself that today is going to be a great day and don’t let anything stop you. Whenever something that you dislike occurs, always try to look at the bright side. For example, “things may get worse if it’s not for this” or “there is always a reason for everything.” You can also give an excuse to yourself - for example, if on the way to work, someone tries to cut into your lane, instead of getting mad, just tell yourself “maybe he is in a rush because his wife is in labour” or “maybe she needs to go to the toilet.”

4. Sleep

“Early to bed, early to rise, makes you healthy, wealthy and wise.” Always make sure you have enough sleep of at least seven to eight hours a day, to help you stay fresh and awake for longer. Not having enough sleep can affect your mood and brain. Thus, we may not function well when we are at work.

5. Exercise

Wake up 30 minutes earlier and do a short exercise before getting ready to go to work. Exercising helps our mind and body get ready for a long day at work as our muscles will start warming up and we are able to release the tension from within us.

6. Planning

Always plan ahead. Prepare your own list one day before the actual day, and list down all the things that you have to complete within the day. This is to prevent you from forgetting any important tasks that you need to do.

7. Time management

When things are not organised, you will tend to get stressed with loads of work. Plan and set a time limit to complete what you need to do at work.

8. Encouraging quotes

Having quotes pasted up on the wall in your workplace can encourage you to have a better day at work. Quotes like, “Very little is needed to make a happy life; it’s all within yourself, in your own way of thinking,” “All is well” or “Life knocks us down but we can choose whether or not to get back up” can really make a difference.

9. Praise yourself

Look in the mirror before you go to work every once in a while. Don’t be shy to praise yourself by telling yourself how good looking you are today or telling yourself that your hair looks wonderful. However, do not over exaggerate and be too proud of yourself, because people do not like individuals who are narcissistic!

10. Breakfast

As the saying goes, “eat breakfast like a king”. Having a healthy breakfast helps to jump start your day as it prepares your body and mind for a busy day at work. Having a nice meal for breakfast can brighten up your day. This is because things that you do and eat first thing in the morning can affect your mood.

Elak Jangkitan Tibi

tibi_zps3687a6c6.jpg

7 Life Lessons

life_zpsa66b6e1a.jpg

You don’t need to travel hundreds of miles or spend thousands of dollars to find a great life coach. In fact, you can find some of the best life coaches in the world much closer to home than you may think…Who are these expert life coaches?

The expert life coaches are – Children!
Children come into the world with a positive ‘can-do’ mindset that we as adults can learn a lot from. 7 life lessons we can learn from children.

Live In The Moment

It never ceases to amaze how quickly children can make the transition from being upset to being happy. Underlying these instantaneous mood swings is the ability to truly live in the moment. Children don’t spend hours reflecting on the past or worrying about the future. They live life as it happens.
As adults we often carry emotional baggage from our previous experiences as well as fears for our future. It’s little wonder that we struggle to enjoy each moment simply for what it is.

Give Yourself Time To Learn

One of the major differences between young students and adult students was that the children gave themselves time to learn.
When they made a mistake, they simply laughed and moved on. The adult students on the other hand, often got worried and frustrated by their mistakes and berated themselves for not being perfect.Children understand that it takes time to become good at something and they know that making mistakes is part of the learning process.

Believe Anything Is Possible

This is an area in which children easily out do most adults. Children truly believe that anything is possible, belief is the secret ingredient for achieving success in every area of your life.

Laugh Out Loud

One of the things children enjoy more than anything else is to laugh and giggle. Some of my happiest memories are of laughing to the point of tears with your child is over some silly incident or comment. For some reason, as we grow older we seem to repress our sense of fun in preference for something called ‘maturity’. Personally, just rather laugh out loud!

Don’t Be Afraid To Love

Children are much more likely to say, "I love you" than most adults. They do not think about or analyse the long term consequences of making this statement. When they feel a sense of love for someone, they simply let them know.

Forgive Quickly And Completely

Children rarely carry a grudge for very long. They may get angry or upset but when they forgive someone, they do it quickly and completely. Adults on the other hand are quite capable of carrying a grudge for many years and even when they do forgive someone, it is often a case of, "I’ll forgive but I’ll never forget!"

Never Lose Your Sense Of Wonder

Children don’t take the world around them for granted. They possess a wonderful sense of curiosity and fun.
