PERMATANG PAUH, Aug 25 The hotter the campaign, the harder the rain. It looks like even Mother Nature herself is trying to tell the constituents and campaigners here to cool their heads over the by-election, less than 24 hours away.

Last night, Pas"s spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat too doused the notion that the party was set on establishing an Islamic country.

-You will not find it stated in any book you buy from Pas that we want to build an Islamic nation,- the 77-year-old ulama said in his address at the Bandar Perda mosque here where he was to lead the Muslim community in a -solat munajat-, special occasion prayers asking for God"s blessings in tomorrow"s by-election.

Instead, he clarified that all Pas wants is to help create a society based on the principles of Islam and urged the people not to kick up a big fuss over the issue.

-It"s like buying beef. You can get beef that has been slaughtered according to Islamic rites from the market. But you can also get beef from the cow that was run over on the road. Both meat are still edible,- he said, drawing laughter from the rapt audience inside and outside the mosque.

-The only difference is that one is halal and the other is haram,- he said. Muslims have a choice, he said.
