Indonesia wins 25 medals at Bangkok Para Powerlifting Championships

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has successfully clinched 25 medals at the Bangkok 2026 World Para Powerlifting Asia-Oceania Open Championships, boosting its chances of qualifying for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games.

“Based on our calculations, all the athletes can qualify for the Nagoya Games in line with our target,” Indonesian national para-powerlifting team coach Coni Ruswanta said in a statement received on Tuesday.

The 25-medal haul comprises six gold, four silver, and 15 bronze, placing Indonesia in the 10th rank in the event, which was hosted by Thailand from April 7 to 12.

Ruswanta praised the athletes' achievements at the championships, which serve as a qualifier for the 2026 Asian Para Games.

With the additional points gained in Thailand, he expressed optimism that 12 Indonesian athletes will secure their spots for the games.

The coach also highlighted a standout performance by Abdul Hadi, who pulled off an impressive feat by clinching two gold medals in the men’s 49kg class with a top lift of 179 kilograms.

Hadi secured gold in both the Best Lift Elite Open and Best Lift Asia categories. He outperformed his main rival, Le Van Cong of Vietnam, who recorded a best lift of 163kg, followed by Kazakhstan’s Yerbolat Karibay with 157kg.

In addition, Indonesia's youngest athlete, Delima Yunia Susanti, also won gold after successfully lifting 93 kilograms.

That lift earned Susanti four gold medals and broke the rookie world record in the women’s 79kg class. She swept the top spots in four categories: Best Lift Rookie Open, Best Lift Rookie Asia, Total Lift Rookie Open, and Total Lift Rookie Asia.

According to Ruswanta, the event provided the coaching team with a clear picture of the competitive landscape for the 2026 Asian Para Games this coming October.

Uzbekistan and China remain tough rivals in the categories where Indonesia traditionally excels. In this regard, he affirmed that the athlete training program will be intensified.

"We are also targeting four athletes to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics," he added.
