Indonesia targets 16,141 schools in national revitalization program

Blora, Central Java (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education aims to revitalize 16,141 educational units to improve access to adequate facilities and support nationwide education quality.

“Initially, the program targeted 10,440 schools. Through self-management, the number increased to 16,141 schools,” said Mariman Darto, expert staff for talent management, on Saturday.

Starting in 2025, schools will implement the revitalization program through self-management, or swakelola, allowing schools to oversee governance, project execution, and community participation.

The initiative includes building rehabilitation and new classrooms, especially for schools with rising student numbers. Key upgrades focus on roofs, toilets, painting, and overall sanitation.

A second phase will cover around 60,000 additional schools, starting March 2026, with funding already approved by the Ministry of Finance.

In 2025, Blora District received the highest Central Java allocation for school revitalization.

Sixty-six units, from early childhood education (PAUD) to senior high schools (SMA), received Rp62.4 billion (US$3.7 million), including four kindergartens, 27 elementary, 27 junior high, three senior high, and five vocational schools.

Darto said improving educational facilities is crucial to raising education quality nationwide.

The program fulfills the government’s constitutional mandate to educate citizens, develop human resources, and is part of President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita missions.
