Indonesia ensures Eid al-Adha 2026 sacrificial animal supply is secure

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed that the supply of animals for qurbani—the Islamic ritual sacrifice—ahead of the 2026 Eid al-Adha remains secure and sufficient to meet this year's increased demand.

"Nationally, the availability of sacrificial animals is sufficient and well-managed," the ministry's Director General of Livestock and Animal Health, Agung Suganda, said during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He explained that the potential supply of sacrificial animals this year has reached 3,246,790 head. Meanwhile, the estimated demand for 2026 is approximately 2,355,470 head, resulting in a surplus of around 891,320.

According to the ministry’s data, the supply of cattle alone has reached 859,268 head, surpassing the projected demand of 791,452.

For buffalo, the supply has reached 33,952 head, far exceeding the demand of 12,914.

Furthermore, goat supply stands at 1.4 million head against a demand of 1.08 million, while sheep availability has reached 935,690 head to meet a projected demand of 466,086.

"The projected demand for sacrificial animals in 2026 has increased by approximately 3.82 percent, or 86,727 head, compared to 2025," he said.

He affirmed that the government is managing the movement of livestock from surplus regions to high-demand areas to ensure a balanced supply and keep prices stable.

To monitor animal health and oversee the sacrificial process, the government has readied 9,743 inspectors to conduct pre- and post-slaughter examinations.

In particular, the domestic slaughtering of Hajj dam (penalty) animals, which began in 2025, will continue this year.

In 2025, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the National Alms Agency (Baznas) facilitated the slaughter of 8,447 goats and sheep, generating a benefit value of approximately Rp21.4 billion (approximately US$1.2 million).

Suganda noted that for 2026, the number of dam animals to be slaughtered in Indonesia is recorded at 10,779 goats and sheep, spanning 17 provinces.

The value of these animals is estimated at between Rp28 billion and Rp30 billion.
