First of all, you should decide whether or not you want to go with a full-service or discount broker. A full-service broker will be more expensive but will be able to provide you with investment advice but will have high commissions and fees. A discount broker will have low commissions and fees but you are on your own when it comes to deciding what to invest in.

If you choose a discount broker, I recommend Scottrade. This broker charges $7 per trade, which is probably the lowest of any broker. Their other fees are also quite low. In spite of this, their services are excellent. The user interface is very intuitive and easy to use.

To start a Scottrade account, an application must be completed. Also, a minimum opening deposit of $500 is required. This only to create the account. After the account is opened, there is no minimum balance requirement.

As for other brokers, I only know of Tradeking and ShareBuilder. Sharebuilder charges $9.95 per trade. Its services are also quite good, but not as good as what Scottrade offers. I have not made serious use of Sharebuilder but I have an account with them. I don't know much about Tradeking since I have not made serious use of it but their user interface and website is not the most user-friendly. I use Scottrade for my investment needs. Dollar for dollar, Scottrade is, in my opinion, among the best discount brokers on the market.
