The well-known market research firm IDC and Gartner have released their year-end forecast, the former think that Microsoft's anti-piracy mechanism could make users to turn to Linux; the latter is even more exaggerated, they think windows will be the last window system, even though Microsoft’s CEO Martin Palmer has previously denied this.

IDC believes that the anti-piracy efforts of Microsoft on the next-generation operating system may be counterproductive. As the functions between windows 7’ s low-end version and high-end version have a big difference, under the strict control of anti-piracy, the user will generally select the high-end products, or even simply change to use Linux.

Gartner said that the next generation of operating system environment will be modular . And the system is incremental and updatable. "The age of making a huge operating system and independent software will be end." Gartner’s spokesman said, "Microsoft will become a key role in this campaign, Windows will upgrade in a more flexible way and the development focus will be switched to enhance up the overall quality. "

Another concern of Gartner is that, according to their projections, 75% enterprises will be infested by the difficult-to-detect, profit-driven and targeted malicious code. It will bring a huge impact to the traditional enterprise security mechanism.

In fact, I am quite agree with Gartner's view, the future of the operating system environment will be modular and diverse. Microsoft will be eliminated if they stick to the old mode.
