RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilian actor Fernando Torres died Thursday in his Rio de Janeiro home after a period of struggling with respiratory problems, his family said. He was 80.

The exact cause of death was not disclosed.

Torres, a famous figure in Brazil for his five-decade career on the big and small screens and in the theater, was perhaps best known to foreign audiences for his supporting role in the Oscar-winning 1985 movie "Kiss of the Spider Woman".

He also directed several Brazilian films and television series.
