KEPALA BATAS: In the past five days, retired odd-job worker Ishak Salleh and his family have been living in a canvas tent in Kampung Padang Beka, Pinang Tunggal here.
Their landlady had ordered that the two houses which they had been staying in be demolished.
Ishak, 65, and his wife Halijah Malim, 58, could only look on helplessly as the house that they had been living in for 36 years was torn down last Wednesday.
Also not spared was the adjacent house built by Ishak's daughter Norhashimah and her husband Jalal Amin, 40.
A heart-broken Ishak said the landlady, whom he did not want to name, was his niece.
She had recently obtained a court order to evict his family, following their failure to pay rent on the two houses.
"We tried to negotiate with her but she was determined to evict us.
"We didn't expect her to resort to demolishing our houses."
Holding back his tears, Ishak said his dream of spending the "last few years of his life" in peace was now as good as gone.
Norhashimah, 36, said they had to stay in the canvas tent because they did not have any other place to go.
"It is quite inconvenient, especially for my three children, but what choice do we have?"
Norhashimah said her husband had exhausted all his sa vings following his retirement from the armed forces five years ago.
Asked about the whereabouts of their niece, Ishak and Norhashimah said they did not know where she was.
