Arsenal eye £12million-rated Spain Under-21 full-back Cesar Azpilicueta

Arsene Wenger's penchant for raiding La Liga for its brightest young talents looks set to continue this month with a swoop for Osasuna right-back Cesar Azpilicueta.

The 20-year-old is highly rated among Spain's top clubs but, like Cesc Fabregas and Fran Merida before him, is thought to favour a move to Arsenal.

However, a buyout clause of £12million could prove a stumbling block with Wenger only willing to offer half that figure for the Spain Under-21 international.

Azpilicueta made his debut for Osasuna away to Real Madrid in 2007 and has gone on to make over 80 appearances for his hometown club.

The player himself is aware of his growing reputation around Europe.

'I know of rumours linking me with other clubs, but I have yet to speak with anybody,' he said earlier this season. 'At the moment, I can only concentrate on working with Osasuna and progressing my football.'

Azpilicueta fits the Arsenal mould of full-backs having been converted from a midfielder, the same path trodden by Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy.

Arsenal hope their recent bond with Osasuna will stand in them in good stead should a move materialise, especially as Manchester City are also said to have registered their interest.

Current Gunners striker Carlos Vela spent time on loan at the Spanish outfit in 2007.

Arsenal are short of cover in the right-back position with Bacary Sagna the only recognised player for the position now Emmanuel Eboue has been converted to a midfield utility man.

Arsenal to capture promising young Lyon star Gonalons
January 17, 2010

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is looking to sign one of the most promising players in French football during the summer. According to the Sunday Mirror, Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons has been recommended by Arsenal's French scout, former player Gilles Grimandi.

Gonalons usually stars as a defensive midfielder, but his tall stature and aggressive style means that he is equally as comfortable at centre-back, where he played and scored against Liverpool in the Champions League earlier this season.

The 20 year-old has broken into the Lyon first team this season and performed impressively, prompting Grimandi to recommend a move to the Emirates Stadium. Wenger is keen to bring him to Arsenal at the end of the season, when Gonalons' contract comes to an end.

Although Lyon has a two year option to keep the player, they can only demand a transfer fee if he moves to another French club and so Arsenal could snap up Gonalons for free.

Arsenal defender Senderos heading to Celtic on loan
January 18, 2010

Celtic are closing in on a loan deal for Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos , according to a report in the Scottish Sun this morning.

The Swiss defender is expected to complete his loan move from Arsenal to the Scottish giants today after Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell spent yesterday in talks with Senderos' agent.

Arsene Wenger’s decision to bring Sol Campbell back to Arsenal meant Senderos was desperate to play first team football in the second half of the season to ensure he will ensure his place in Switzerland’s World Cup squad.

Celtic boss Tony Mowbray was eager to strengthen his backline after the departure of Gary Caldwell to Wigan Athletic and injuries to Glenn Loovens , Danny Fox and Stephen McManus

Senderos has been out of favour at Arsenal for some time and spent last season on loan at Italian giants AC Milan.

In 2009/2010, Senderos is yet to play in the Premier League and Champions League. It seems almost certain that the 24-year-old will leave Arsenal on a free in the summer as his contract is up at the end of the season.
