Arsenal Arsenal Transfer Rumors

Chelsea lead Arsenal and Manchester City in chase for Racing Santander's Spanish starlet Sergio Canales

By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 1:23 AM on 12th January 2010

Chelsea are chasing Spain's latest young superstar Sergio Canales and hope to have a deal in place before the end of the month.

The 18-year-old attacking midfielder from Racing Santander has shot to prominence in recent weeks with four goals in his last three games, including two in the club's surprise 2-1 win over Sevilla on Saturday.

He is out of contract in the summer but has a clause which automatically gives him a one-year extension should he play 450 minutes of football.

That time is up over his next three games and a clutch of clubs are frantically talking to Santander in the hope of sealing his signature over the coming weeks.

Canales's father and agent Angel would prefer him to stay in Spain but there is a complication because another La Liga club, Deportivo La Coruna, own 50 per cent of his rights from a deal between the clubs in 2006 and they want to cash in.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester City have all shown interest but Chelsea are at the fore should they get the go-ahead to trade.

Everton’s top scorer Saha could join the Gunners

Arsene Wenger's wallet appears to have frozen shut during the recent cold snap but according to the Daily Mail a thaw is on its way. The paper reports that Arsenal are "weighing up" a move for Everton striker Louis Saha after news emerged that the Blues won't cave in to the Frenchman's demand for a new three-year contract worth £60,000-a-week.

The 31-year-old Saha, who arrived at Goodison Park from Manchester United in August 2008, wants to secure his future as he enters the twilight of his career. But Everton just haven't the cash to see him into a cosy retirement, even though he's the club's top scorer this season with 12 goals to his name.

But according to the Mail, Arsenal are so impressed with Saha that the Gunners are willing to compromise their normal rule of offering only one-year contracts to players over 30 and would hand Saha a two-year deal with the option of a third year.

Wenger saw Saha in action when Everton visited the Emirates last Saturday and held the Gunners to a 2-2 draw. Discussing which strikers should make France's World Cup squad, the Arsenal manager said: "When Saha plays 10 games on the trot you can compare him with any striker."

The French forward's future at Goodison Park has come under speculation of late with the club understood to be unhappy with his demands for a new three-year deal worth £60,000-a-week.

Despite him being David Moyes' top scorer this season, the Mail reports that Everton have been trying to negotiate a shorter deal with bonus payments.

Wenger's interest comes as reports that he is in the market for a new striker gather pace amid an ever-growing injury list at Arsenal. And the French manager was full of praise for Saha when asked who he believed France should play up front at the World Cup 2010.

"When Saha plays 10 games on the trot you can compare him with any striker," he said. "There is a bit of congestion up there because you have two new comers like Gignac and Benzema, you have still Anelka and Henry who will be at the World Cup [but] he has a chance of making the squad."

Also reported to be on Wenger's transfer wish-list are West Ham's Carlton Cole and Toulouse's Andre-Pierre Gignac.

Wenger targets 'finisher'

Arsene Wenger is lining up a bid for Everton striker Louis Saha after the French international stalled on a new deal at Goodison Park, according to the Daily Mail. The Arsenal manager is known to have been scouring the continent for weeks in search of a player who can cover for long-term absentee Robin van Persie but has so far struggled to locate a suitably priced individual with the quality to help the Gunners mount a title challenge.

Saha is 31 but Arsenal are willing to compromise their stance on offering just one-year contracts to players over 30 and would look at a two-year deal with a one-year option.

With 12 goals to his name this term, David Moyes is desperate to keep hold of his prized asset and is thought to have offered Saha a £60,000-a-week deal. With fitness fitness concerns still hampering Yakubu and loan signing Jo being disciplined for going AWOL, the Toffees recognise that their outside chance of achieving European football depend on maintaining stability in the final third of the pitch.

Speaking last week ahead of Arsenal’s match-up with Everton, Wenger made clear his admiration for Saha:

“He’s a finisher, he’s a good centre forward. His career has always been a little bit bothered by injuries. But when Louis Saha plays ten games on the trot you can compare him with any striker.

Asked if he felt the Toffee striker could make the French World Cup squad alongside the likes of former Gunners pair Nicolas Anelka and Thierry Henry, Wenger continued:

“He has yes. They have a bit of congestion up there because they have two newcomers such as [Andre-Pierre] Gignac and [Karim] Benzema. They still have Anelka and still Thierry Henry will be at the World Cup. Saha is one of the outsiders.”

Arsenal: Why I may re-sign Sol Campbell - Wenger

Jan 12 2010

Arsene Wenger last night revealed he is interested in re-signing Sol Campbell.

Wenger confirmed yesterday’s Mirror Sport story as he insisted Campbell has proved in training sessions with Arsenal that he can still be a “force“ at the highest level.

But Wenger admitted that Nicklas Bendtner’s return to fitness may mean he will not have to buy a striker in January as he also ruled out a move for West Ham’s injury-prone striker Carlton Cole.

When asked whether 35-year-old Campbell could still be a force in the Premier League, Wenger said: “Why not? He trains very hard. We have a level of interest for every good player.

“He has a fantastic attitude, good fitness. Of course he is not the youngest but he is in a very good shape.

“He can still play in the Premier League, I’ve said that many times. He is important in the dressing-room as well. He’s positive with the young players. Every year we have one or two like that.

“I think a Premier League club will sign him,” said Wenger. When reminded Arsenal are a Premier League club, Wenger smiled: “Of course.”

Campbell has been training with Arsenal for the past two months since quitting Notts County and is now a free agent and available in January.

Arsenal are interested in signing Campbell on a short term contract until the end of the season and it would be the first time ever that Wenger has re-signed a former player.

It would be an easy solution to Wenger’s defensive problems as Johan Djourou is out injured, Philippe Senderos is out of favour and Mikael Silvestre is the only back up to centre halves William Gallas and Thomas Vermaelen.

But Arsenal are insisting that Swiss defender Senderos - desperate to quit the club to get regular football ahead of next summer’s World Cup - must go before they will bring anyone else in.

Wenger yesterday said Senderos was out with a foot injury but the centre half was reluctant to play in the FA Cup at West Ham last Sunday as he is keen to get a move in January. Everton are one of several clubs interested.

But Wenger’s own transfer search may have come to an end with news yesterday that Danish striker Bendtner - out since undergoing groin and hernia surgery in November - came through a series of fitness tests.

Bendtner could now be back in two weeks and Wenger admits that may mean he holds off about signing a striker until the summer as he insisted that Arsenal are still in the hunt to sign Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh.

Liverpool have this week also held talks with Chamakh who is a free agent at the end of the season but Wenger smiled: “I know they have spoken - they called me from up there!

“He is a player we have an interest in, but we are focused on short term at the moment.”

Wenger admitted he is keen on Toulouse striker Andre-Pierre Gignac but ruled out West Ham’s England striker Cole because of his persistent injury problems. Cole is currently out with a knee problem while Gignac is expensive.

“Carlton Cole is a great player that I rate but he is injured at the moment,” said Wenger. “We don’t want to add an injured player to an already long list of injured players. We will take somebody who is at least available straight away.

“I like the player (Gignac), I don’t need to send people to watch him because I know him well enough already because he plays for the French national team. But Lyon tried to buy him last year for nearly £20m, so the price was too high.”

Wenger also dismissed speculation out of Spain yesterday linking Real Madrid and Barcelona with captain Cesc Fabregas. But the Arsenal manager insisted he is not for sale and is under contract until 2015.

Arsenal have already written to both Spanish clubs to warn them off Fabregas and Wenger yesterday pledged his captain would still be at the Emirates next season.

Wenger added: “All the players we have worked with, and we have a long commitment, and they’re all tied up until 2015. We have a long-term plan to be a winning team, and Cesc Fabregas is part of that.

“Here, the priority No1 is sport. We have a healthy management, we’re not in financial need. I’ve fought to keep the club in a healthy financial situation. So any decision we make will be with the football in mind.”
