Arsenal Arsenal Transfer Rumors

Franck Ribery move to Chelsea, Manchester City or Arsenal would be no big loss to Bayern Munich, claims Matthias Sammer

Losing Franck Ribery would not weaken Bayern Munich, according to former Germany captain Matthias Sammer.

Former Borussia Dortmund coach Sammer claims the Frenchman, who has been hampered by injury this term, should not walk back into the Bayern team when the Bundesliga starts up again next month after the winter break.

The 1996 European Footballer of the Year feels Bayern coach Louis van Gaal has created a side which is strong enough without the winger, who has been linked with a move to Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, as well as Spanish giants Real Madrid.

'Of course the class of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben is undisputed, but to build them into the team is going to be a huge task for Van Gaal,' Sammer, who led Dortmund to the Bundesliga title in 2002 and is now responsible for youth development with the German Football Association, told Munich's Tz newspaper.

'Bayern have found a settled team who can always play their best and they showed that in Turin (against Juventus), without Ribery.'

Reports in Germany today claimed Ribery and Bayern have already agreed terms with Real over a transfer in the summer should the 26-year-old choose not to commit himself to a new contract by the end of the season.

Ribery's current deal expires in 2011 and Bayern chairman Uli Hoeness recently admitted it would be "negligent" not to sell him next summer if, 12 months later, he would be available for free.

German World Cup winner Paul Breitner, who acts as an advisor to the Bayern board, also feels it would not be a disaster if Ribery were sold.

'If so, then FC Bayern would never have carried on after (Gerd) Muller or (Franz) Beckenbauer,' he said. 'You cannot cry about losing players.'

Wenger is also rumoured to be contemplating a move for 15-year-old QPR prodigy Raheem Sterling and could fight it out with rivals Tottenham for 21-year-old Watford goalkeeper Scott Loach.

However, it appears that Bordeaux winger Marouane Chamakh, another of Wenger's January targets, will be staying put until the time being. The Moroccan striker wants to help his club retain the Ligue 1 title and will discuss his future in the summer.

Arsenal on the transfer trail of Benfica midfield star

Arsene Wenger is keeping tabs on Benfica midfielder Hassan Yebda as he looks to strengthen his squad.

Yebda, 25, is currently on loan at Portsmouth until the end of the season and is a mainstay in Algeria’s team for the African Nations Cup and next summer's World Cup.

Wenger is keen to add some strength in depth to his midfield and considered re-signing former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira but there are doubts about the Inter Milan midfielder’s current fitness.

That has left Wenger looking at other options and Yebda is on his radar as he is available on the cheap from Benfica. He attracted interest from Everton last summer before joining Portsmouth.

Wenger is also looking to sign a striker in January and is also considering a move for a defender, with Swiss centre-half Philippe Senderos set to leave with Atletico Madrid keen on him.

But Wenger has a limited budget and says he will not make any buys unless he can find the right deal.

Wenger - Transfer window gives me a dilemma

Thursday, December 31, 2009
By Chris Harris

Arsène Wenger admits that he faces a dilemma when the transfer window swings open on Friday.

The Arsenal manager told Arsenal TV Online last month that he could enter the market to find a replacement for Robin Van Persie, who could miss the rest of the season with ankle ligament damage. Wenger's need for attacking reinforcements became even more pressing when Nicklas Bendtner's lengthy lay-off was extended to mid-January thanks to a persistent groin injury.

Theo Walcott completes a trio of strikers on the sidelines but, although Arsenal's treatment room remains busy, the goals have flowed on the pitch. Wenger's side have scored 15 times in six Premier League games in December, taking 16 points from a possible 18 to rein in the leaders, Chelsea.

The manager is still on the look-out for new recruits but recent evidence suggests that Arsenal are coping rather well without their absentees.

"It's not completely rational, football," said Wenger. "The superficial rationality is not the real one sometimes.

"It’s true that we have problems with our strikers. Even I say that. Everybody tells me to buy strikers, but when I look at the League, nobody has scored more goals than us.

"We have players who move the ball well and everybody gets in dangerous positions. And that’s why, with the confidence high, everyone can score goals. But we are still in the market."

Arsenal fans will be watching Wenger's transfer-market manoeuvres with great interest over the next month. But if the Frenchman does bring in a new signing, he will certainly not break the bank.

"The rules in professional football are to win and balance the budget," said Wenger. "That's the basic rule, and I always did fight for that. All the rest is half-cheating.

"I don't speak about what's happened here, but that's what I'm for. For every club it has to be the same: for everybody. I always pleaded for financial fair play.”
